Tire Dating Question...maybe I should rephrase that...nah...
« on: April 24, 2020, 08:40:30 am »
So yesterday my kid picked up his brand new Pilot Sports for the Mustang...and of course I check the date codes because...and 3 of them are 0320 which is awesome, but the 4th is 4218  :'(.

So, this morning as I see him getting ready to leave for work, he's throwing that "old" tire in the trunk of his car and I guess he intends to return it to Cdn Tire, because he wants them all to be 0320's and not one that's almost 2 yrs older.

Is he right?  Or did I create a monster by telling him that one was older?  You could def see it too, 3 tires were black as night, the other one was getting that almost faded/brownish hue.  I just don't know if it's really any sort of issue at all.

But this is the kid who insists on changing the oil in even the lawn mower every year...dude, it's still looking newer than the stuff that comes out of a bottle! Leave it! (blah blah blah...it's not good forever dad, it still gets old and broken down  :P ::))

If Cdn Tire will exchange it, then why not. Most tire experts say tires should be replaced 6yrs after the manufactured date regardless of tread depth due to the rubber breaking down. So he does have that data backing him up.

Anything in their Return/Exchange Policy about tire dates? The damn tires haven't been driven on...

If the tires have been stored correctly away from UV light, I would say 6 years from first service.

But this is also why friends or family don't let friends or family buy tires from Canadian Tire.

Normally I would be concerned but in reality Pilot Sports on a Mustang are only going to last 2-3 years tops anyhow. Perhaps just 1.

Nope, you've got the wrong guy.  It's a 2013 5.0 he bought with the original tires on it...he's driving it wrong.  ;D
(also having winter tires doesn't hurt - but stilll... :P)

CT can be ridiculous and it costs them a lot of customers. Two years back I bought a couple of X-Ice3 online while they were 10% off and it showed the local store had them in stock. When picking them up they hand me papers stating it is a special order and thus no returns, or restocking fee or smth to that extent. Luckily the tires were fresh and perfect but I doubt with this sort of trickery I will buy tires there again. Oh, and the installation was offered at $35 per tire while costco charged 15 at the time.

Tell your kid to call/email the store manager first. He is absolutely right wanting to return that one odd tire. Maybe somebody tried to balance it and it didn't, who knows. That's a crap I wouldn't want to sort out.

I think the difference in colour is the issue.  Wouldn't exchange it eh?  Well it's not nicknamed CRAPPY TIRE for nothing.

A few thoughts:

If one is going to be fussy about the manufacture date, then one ought to state that up front.  It's OK to be fussy, but it's not OK to be fussy without warning the sales guy.

Tires in storage age very slowly compared to tires in service.

It is common in the tire industry to believe that any tire within 6 years of its manufacturer date can be sold as new.  I said "Believe" because I know of no data that supports that statement - HOWEVER - the company I worked for could not find any significant difference between freshly made tires and tires stored in their warehouse for 3 years.

Heat seems to be the largest contributor to tires aging.  Tires operating in Arizona age way faster than tires in colder climates.  See the Arrhenius rule that says that the rate of a chemical reaction doubles for every 10°C increase in temperature.

My take on the various (and contradictory) statements about tire aging is that 6 years is the limit if you live in a hot climate (AZ, NV, CA, TX, and FL), and if you live in a cold climate (MN, ID, ND, WI, or MT) than the limit is 10 years.  Since this is a Canadian website, I'm thinking that 10 years applies.

He’s an actual tire engineer. Or retired tire engineer.

He’s been around here (and other forums) near forever, but only chimes in when he has useful information to add, unlike all the rest of us BS-spewing regulars.  :rofl2:

Another thanks for the contributions.

So Mr. 5.0 got his tires installed yesterday, and I got the bill emailed to be at work. $125 to install 4 tires...yet the bill comes to $187. Huh? WTF?  I told him to go talk to them.  No effing way "retraining the TPMS sensors" costs...anything.  Feckin' car does that on its own FFS.  I have yet to ever have to get that done, and that includes when I bought new wheels and TPMS sensors for the Fusion. So I'm not sure WTF's going on there.

Better be a mistake anyway.

Is there a tire levy fee in there as well? Or is that an Ontario thing.
