The timing is disappointing as I was hoping they'd be available by the time my current lease is up in September.

I'm not completely sold on the front end styling but the tech and performance sound great.

I've been losing interest in the MK8 but this could get me interested again.

Quote
While it's too early to say that we'll get this one here, the PHEV version of the car, the GTE, is also upgraded for the Mk 8. The 150-hp 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder and 114-hp electric motor give that car the same 245 hp max as the GTI, with 295 lb-ft of torque. More importantly, at least for when you're not going full-send, the GTE offers a 60-km electric range and can stay in EV mode to about 130 km/h.

Same here plus hate the DSG shifter and some of the wheels.
 Love the seats though....

Not a bad overall evolution of the car... I don't mind the styling inside & out.

Well, the good news is the Mk7 is still around, and is a great looking, great driving car.

Aren't we supposed to be gear heads drooling over the performance and handling upgrades?

It has a bit more power, but I didn't see anything about upgraded handling (okay, it has a new Vehicle Dynamics Manager, for whatever that's worth  ::) )

It's basically just a refreshed MK7 with a bunch of screens and software replacing actual gauges and buttons. I'll hang onto my modded MK6, thanks.  :)

Yeah, I'd say the headline is a bit misleading.

The switch from MK6 to MK7 was a "Complete Overhaul." From what I've read, this is mostly just cosmetic changes to the exterior, and of course the whole screenification of the interior.

Well, as in it's still based on the MQB platform...then yeah, the only things left to change are the exterior cosmetics, interior, and the drivetrain.  I can't see VW abandoning the 2.0T anytime soon...
