MDX Rubbers
« on: February 27, 2020, 11:08:51 pm »
The MDX needs new rubber this spring. Top three runners from what I can tell are:

Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus
Continental Crosscontact LX25
Michelin Premier LTX

Tire size is 245/55/19. Anything I’m missing here?  Please keep in mind this is a mall crawler/highway cruiser. Dry/wet grip and low noise are top priorities. I don’t give a :censor: about fuel economy claims. I don’t care too much about wear rating either. So far I’m leaning towards the Pirellis.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

I’m in the same boat. I am going to go with Pirelli and as of March 1 st they offer 60 bucks back on the Cinturato

I have the Premier LTX on the Highlander.  It's a fantastic tire for what you're after.  But, reviews seem to suggest they wear easily. If you put on lots of kms, look elsewhere.

Michelin would be my choice. DND seems to like them.

^ For these types of tires, normally I would agree Chaos.  However the Pirelli's seem to get great reviews and are priced lower from what I've seen so far.  I just started looking/researching last night so I'll see what other info I can find.

Who/what is DND?

Correct. Our shop services their light duty vehicles from a couple of bases, and they will only spec Michelins.

A budget friendly option is General Grabber HTS60. They've only been on my wife's car for one season but so far they seem nice and quiet with decent wet handling. They go on special at Canadian Tire for 25% quite regularly as well.

Michelin has the biggest manufacturing presence in Canada of tiremakers.  Wonder if that has anything to do with the decision?

FWIW, I had a horrible time trying to get all-season tires other than Michelin balanced on an MDX. The problem resolved when I went back to Michelin.

I've always found that Michelin's balance great & run true... none of this out of round BS that I've encountered with other tires over the years.

Ordered a set of Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus II from Costco this morning. These weren’t available on the website last week, but just happened to check this morning. $1130 installed with tax, and get $100 shopping card with the purchase. Pirelli has a rebate on right now also, not sure if I can send in for that too but I’ll look into it.

It may be a bit early once these come in to install on the MDX. I’ll plan on taking the summer wheels in and just get them put on the wheels. Hopefully they don’t have any rules against that.

Yup. Gotta admit, one of my tire buying criteria is they have to look good  :shuffle:
The tire above would pass the test  :)

Ok, and also not be Hercules or Kumho.

The tread pattern is a little odd, with all the little blocks, but ya, a good looking tire I think.

Tire rack had the only decent test I could find.

Nice looking tires. Will be interesting to hear what you think after some mileage.

That is going to be a hard no.

No idea, Pirelli has plants in many countries and I couldn’t find specifics for this tire.

One thing I thought about afterwards with all the covid and small business talk; I feel a bit bad buying from a large chain rather than a local shop.

Tires are in, will be installed on loose summer wheels tomorrow.

I would have sworn the OE tires were Contis, turns out they are Michelin Latitude Tour HP.   Only had about 40k on them. Thought they were a good tire though besides the low mileage.

The standard Latitudes have better tread life but the Tour HP just melt. Great tire but they don't last.
