My pet peeve with bike reviews is rarely do they detail out the size of the rider. If the rider in this case was bottoming the suspension on some cross ruts and was riding a unloaded bike and weighs 165 lbs. then a rider weighing 200lbs with some luggage is going to absolutely destroy the suspension. Very rarely do they go into detail how (if) they had the sag set correctly etc. The handling is very reider specific especially if the suspension is left stock.
fair points...this is why demo days or test rides are good, but those can be tricky (as many places don't offer that) and a new rider testing the limits of a bike they've never ridden before is likely not possible either.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

Probably cheap(hahaha) to insure compared to anything bigger than 500 cc.

Well the KLR was almost $700/year. This should be closer to the $500 mark

On insurance? Shop around. People swear by Klondike who sells Intact but they charge $25 extra for new customers and Mac Insurance also sells Intact and doesn’t charge that $25. I was with TD the first 6 months but they wanted freaking $700 for my R3 with ABS, even though the non ABS models were only $500. I pay under $500 with Intact with replacement coverage.

YEEEEESSSSS!!!! Fob!!! You legend!
Haven't logged on for a while, when I do, best news ever! Fob is getting a bike.
IF you're buying a dual sport and planning on doing some super fun off-road/soft-road stuff then go get schooled up at Clinton Smout's SMART Adventure School. Training and seat time are worth their weight in gold.

Well, the wife didn't come, but the Versys is the bike. I sat on it, a KLR and a CBR500x just to be sure and its the best fit. Now to find a good deal on a 2018

Nice choice. That bike will top out at 170 km/h easily and cruise at 130 all day. More HP than my CB 300F that topped out at 159, just a little less than my R3 which I got to 181.

I think the one thing I don't like about the Versys 300 is it isn't a 400.

The Ninja and Z are 400s,  why isn't the Versys?

Newer yes, but been out 2 or 3 years.  Is the Versys engine the several year old one from the defunct Ninja 300

Bare bones, all purpose (so you can take it to work) $500 ded w/$10m liability (it's only $21) the Versys is $840.

The Z400 is a fack me you're kidding $1211...fack me indeed.  Fackers,

Just because it looks racier.  It's still only a 400...not like it'll be deathly fast FFS.

Let's hope they make a Versys 400 then.. :P

You might appreciate the extra torque the CB500X has to offer on the highway. Not a whole lot more HP, probably good for 190 km/h indicated max speed vs. 170 km/h, but almost double the torque. You can cruise at 130 on the Versys-X 300 with a bit of downshifting up the bigger hills while you may not have to downshift at all on the 500.

If you're mostly planning to do off-roading, the Versys-X 300 which is 45 lb less will be appreciated.

I just don't like the riding position on the CB500X, thats all. I'm going to pick up a Versys tommorow. Found a 2018, with 0km, at a dealer for under $5k with ABS.

Is a center stand a worthwhile upgrade??
