The V65 Magna was the start of the "muscle cruisers" and by the time the V-Max came along, it was no longer anywhere near the top of the HP heap.  Honda really got the performance ball rolling back when it rolled out the CB750 and things got competitive among the Japanese makers after that.  All through the 80s bikes got faster and faster.  Everyone started rolling out 1100 and 1200cc bikes that could run into the 10s and it became a numbers game.  Remember Jay "PeeWee" Gleason? He took a V-Max and ran it into the 9s.

That one run basically sold out the V-Maxes instantly.  I wasn't into the muscle bikes, I loved the sport machines, but damn, those bikes were ferocious.
the V-Max always was and still is a beast of a machine...you can still buy them too:

174 HP and 113 TQ...if you care about that sort of thing.

If I was going to go down that route, I'd get a Rocket 3R or a Diavel X.

if you like something nostalgic, like a Triumph Bonneville, but want something perhaps a little more reliable (if they are?) and save a bit of money at the same time, Kawasaki has brought their W800 to NA this year.

https://www.kawasaki.ca/en-ca/motorcycle/w/retro-classic/w800

retro looks, modern features, Japanese reliability...$10,400.

the Rocket 3R is getting somewhat underwhelming reviews...and i don't personally like the looks of the Ducati, nor would i ever buy one of their bikes...that said, i wouldn't get a V-Max either as i like being alive.  ;D

they've made them for years, but never brought them to this side of the pond until now...they have 3 different versions if you like more chrome and colour...they get pretty decent reviews.

I love the looks of the W800 and the Triumphs. I'd love a T120. Maybe one day. My TU250X is sort of the half size / one third budget equivalent. They are hard to find used however and a little pricy for what they are new. From all accounts bullet proof though.

If you like somewhat retro looks...how about this one then?
someone else barely broke it in and soaked up all the depreciation doing it.

i honestly don't know how Kawasaki was allowed to sell the W800...it is a borderline clone of a Bonneville...now, as they've never been here before, maybe they've always looked like that (which is likely generic 1960/70s motorcycle), so perhaps that's why i've never heard Triumph scream about it...but come on, i have a hard time thinking this is a coincidence:

you'll have to go used as they don't seem to sell that any more (didn't seem to last long).

another nice "retro" style of bike is the Kawasaki Z900RS (i like the SE trim myself):

H2R, drool.  Yeah, if I was a lotto winner, I'd have one.  They're just insane beasts and they BITE.  Some have been run into the 8s in the quarter, but they take a lot of skill to that.  That said, when a doofus can carefully pedal a motorcycle to low 10s at 150 you know it's seriously fast.

BaT has many bikes listed:

That's my first bike, but mine was blue and it was a 750 (maybe an 84 model?)  Bought it brand new, didn't even have my license, rode it home.  First time you steer into a corner on the highway is the last time you steer into a corner on the highway...WTF! What's happening!! And then you learn quick to "turn left to go right" - Ahhh! Phew!!  Those things sound cool...but are so dreadfully underpowered you'd probably get beaten by a Civic...from 2005 (a new one would walk away like you were on a scooter).  :P  And god forbid you get a sidewind.  ::)  Probably lose half your power there alone.  The carb vent tubes were in a shitty spot, we found if we moved them more sheltered in the carbs it was better, but still, what a dog of a bike.  Passing a semi was worse than my truck with a loaded travel trailer  :P.  Assuming you didn't lose power half way past.  Other than it looked cool, I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me.

What about these? Are Suzuki's any good?  Seems like a pretty decent price for what the bike looks like.

Strip the bags off for daily riding...should have plenty of power no?

I'd like the 1250fa - even if it's not the big powerhouse the displacement makes you think it might be.  It's actually pretty light, so it's nimble and the power goes a long way - perfect for sport touring.  I mean, a bike that puts 100hp to the tire and weighs <600lbs isn't slow.  Not fast, but far from slow.  It's kinda like a more old-school version of the ST1300 - less fancy, chain vs shaft, and a little more playful.

Is this just now a random used bike thread? Stay on topic people!  :rofl2:

What you really need Fob is a 30 year old two stroke turbo cruiser, as that's what a friend of a friend had once!
