that big V4 was no slouch...113HP in 1984 was nothing to sneeze at.

Mmmmmm VFR-1000!!!!! Loved that bike, big v-twin sport bike. Did 2 demo days on that & wanted to replace my zx6 with that.

VFR1000 is definitely not a V-Twin.

You're confused.

Perhaps you mean VTR1000 (aka Superhawk, aka FireStorm)?  I owned a red one!  Bought it in Belleville and rode it home!

Crap!!! Yes, VTR!! I found that to be one of my favorite bikes to ride.

The VFR used to blow up the camshafts though.  Not sure about the F

The V65 Magna and 1000 Interceptor were among the fastest bikes you could buy at the time.  They could break into the 10s with some skill.  Suzuki came out with the GS1150E in 1985 and it ran mid 10s all day long, the 80s race was on, and then came the V-Max, etc.  Bikes got quick.

well, i didn't have a problem with the cams, but the engine did go...engine seized while i was on the 401 (fortunately, only like 1 minute out of town, so it wasn't a long walk to a phone)...i won't fault the bike though, i think i got screwed by a shady shop who did some work on it...sold the bike for parts and bought the FZ750 (sadly, from same shop, which i also had problems with not long after).

I remember when the ZX-11D came out.  1990.  Held the top speed record for like 6 years!!

my NS400R was a 2 stroke...the only downside was smelling like an oil refinery when you got off it. :)

i suppose...but this was back in '88, so it would have just had whatever 2 stroke oil Honda recommended for it.

Always loved those Interceptors, always wished I'd tried a VFR800 too.  Back in high school there was a couple of guys, one with a V65, one with a V-Max...both grew up racing and riding dirt bikes...they'd be doing wheelies for miles, blowing past the school on the highway at mega speed.  So cool (when you're in high school) and kinda freaky when you look in your rearview mirror and see the bottom of something coming at you and blows past on one wheel. "Oh, it's just Bugsy!"  ;D O0

Friend of mine bought the V65...I ended up buying the V-Max (the owner "made" me ride it one night - he grabbed my 750 Nighthawk - and basically forced me to take his bike...I was sold 30 seconds in. Damn...that was the best, and I still romanticize about it today...obviously...)  Anyway, we switched for a little bit of time, and I will say...V-Max to V65...no comparison.  The V65 was slow.  You could honk on that thing all day and it was as scary as a kitten.  The V-Max would crush that bike in every way from here 'til Sunday.  Fack I want one again...unfortunately my extra 100 lbs won't make it any faster.  When you're a 135 lb 19 yr old...you're not stressing much of anything.  Nostalgia Wax is the best wax.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

The V65 Magna was the start of the "muscle cruisers" and by the time the V-Max came along, it was no longer anywhere near the top of the HP heap.  Honda really got the performance ball rolling back when it rolled out the CB750 and things got competitive among the Japanese makers after that.  All through the 80s bikes got faster and faster.  Everyone started rolling out 1100 and 1200cc bikes that could run into the 10s and it became a numbers game.  Remember Jay "PeeWee" Gleason? He took a V-Max and ran it into the 9s.

That one run basically sold out the V-Maxes instantly.  I wasn't into the muscle bikes, I loved the sport machines, but damn, those bikes were ferocious.

My XZ550 was essentially half a Vmax engine, believe it made the same 12hp/l, not bad for the time. Got a lot of use out of that bike

the V-Max always was and still is a beast of a machine...you can still buy them too:
