and a Kawasaki version of the DRZ. You could probably walk away with this for $3 or $3.2.  If shopping DRZ (or the Kawai eq) don't get hung up po year becuase Suzuki didn't really ever change them. Condition rules.

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-dirt-bikes-motocross/calgary/2004-kawasaki-klx400sr-suzuki-drz400s-6000kms-street-legal/1484451781

I have to get used to bike pricing, $5k for a 7 year old one

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-dirt-bikes-motocross/calgary/2011-kawasaki-klr/1485927535

or brand new for $7500ish

KLRs never change either. That one has a few extras and looks clean. No GST and knock price down. How tall are you? If you have decently long legs DRZ or KLR will be fine. Actually that KLR is real nice. Lots of extras. Just don't pretend it is a dirt bike and you will be fine. Nice tractable motor. Lets go buy.

New bike pricing is very deceptive. They add tax, deliver, assembly and all sorts of fees. That $7500 becomes $9000 out the door.

That a boy. In all seriousness that KLR looks good. The only thing I would be concerned with is the tires if they are original. Knock him back $400  for the tires and $400 just because and grab it for $4k.

If I bought another bike it would be KLR. Not sure I'd want to learn on one. That is a 60s small displacement toy.

Only think I dislike about the KLR is the weight.  It's a bit heavy...
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Been watching a lot of Fortnine in the last week.

Lotsa good info there.   Entertaining vids too.

With a  31" inseam, a DRZ might seem intimidating at first, I think a KLR is a bit lower, but also heavier.  Sit on both.
The KLR is a tractor that'll be there for the zombie apocalypse.
The DRZ does better wheelies in between mudholes.

My 2001 DRZ is going strong.

Yes it is. Not a lot of high tech in a KLR

If height is an issue, you can put on a Kouba link.

I had a Kouba link plus short gel seat on my DRZ.

Those Kouba links are a great idea, an inch should make it perfect

I have a line on a very lightly used Suzuki Marauder (12k kms). 1600CC performance cruiser.  A great starter bike.  ;D It is sort of a "mid size" cruise as I think they modified a GSXR chassis. It was a strange cooperation between Suzuki and Kawasaki (called a mean streak). It didn't sell because it was not named Harley. This specific example only left it's crate in about 2010.

Learner bike?  You crazy! (you're being facetious, right?)

I forgot about those, that's a good looking bike.  For $3g, I'd be on it.  I should check if there's any available locally (hahahahahaha...not even a rats chance in hell) and what they cost to insure in the province that hates efficient 2 wheeled transportation.  Never thought of Suzuki or Kawai as a choice...don't know why, it's not like they're FGC compared to Honda or Yamaha, right?

I'd love that Indian FTR too...fack what a pretty machine.  Even better in real.

So, after about 20 years of not shitting and not getting off the pot, I am finally planning to go for a motorcycle safety course this spring, get my class 6 and buy a motorcycle of sorts this spring/summer. Now I know asking "whats the best bike for a beginner" is like asking what the best beer is, so I won't be doing that. However, I have been looking around, watching some videos and the Suzuki Vstrom 650 seems to fit the bill for my wants/needs. Slap some more dual purpose tires on there and I can even do a bit of a dirt road every now and then. Thoughts, opinions?? Thank you

Woot, welcome to the club!

Ron is a great source of info on bikes as he is very experienced, but he also has what we call in work, 'strong opinions, strongly held'.  :rofl2: So don't be afraid to make your own mind up.

A dual sport is good if you want to do a little off roading, if not, I'd stick to something in the 300cc-650cc range like others have suggested.  Personally I like more modern bikes with fuel injection, especially Japanese as they are just more reliable.  And don't get anything too heavy, you'll be picking it up if you go off road.

KLRs are good but slightly heavy, the Honda CRF250L is good if you are doing lots of off road, and very reliable and light, just not great over 80kph. Get the newest you can, the technology and quality has gotten better over the years, and it will have less abuse.  If you buy new, do it now and you might get a killer deal on a 2019 with no PDI fees.

If you are going longer distances, more than one cylinder reduces vibration.  Singles can get a bit buzzy.

P.S. The SV650 is a great starter bike.
P.P.S. Don't get a cruiser or a scooter, both are terrible.  :rofl2:
P.P.P.S. Have a look at lightly used Yamaha MT-07's.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

I found a nice starter bike for you. The automatic should make it easy right? Makes less than 300hp.

I can't believe someone rode that thing almost 15k kms!

Now that is rare. Still I have always had a soft spot for the 383 stroker.
