If you're buying $300US jeans, I highly recommend Draggin Jeans based out of Australia so their exchange rate is a lot better. They drag test their jeans to find out the abrasion resistance which ranges from over 4 seconds to over 7 seconds with their newest generation jeans.

Isn't that jacket like a grand? Wouldn't spend that much until you:

a) know you are really into riding

b) know what kind of jacket/features you like

IE I found a solid jacket (leather or fabric) too hot for commuting/city riding most of the year

$390 CAD shipped actually. I did check draggin out, and none of the styles I looked at came with any kind of armor. The Klims come with knee, hip and tailbone armor plus a bunch of kevlar, I know they aren't cheap, but I like the fact that they have all the pads.

More like $1300...he he...So what would have similar levels of protection??
Lighten up Francis.....

I'd get something like this as a 1st jacket for a newbie rider...

Jeans are cool (style) but I'd recommend over pants. You can wear anything under them, like work pants, jeans, etc (or nothing when it's hot). Jeans are hot as hell in the summer. I have both and wear the over pants far more often.

Ymmv.

Not sure about availability in AB, but have looked up RE Himalayan?

Its a really cool bike, but every test I have seen on it warns people about the poor reliability and build quality. I love the looks of it though

Nice jacket for sure!

All Gore Tex jackets are spendy....no getting around that. As much as I love them, they didn't flow enough air for my taste...especially when goofing around off road. You get hot fast there.

Check out the Rev It Defender (or their other offerings) if you must have Gore Tex.

Otherwise, some other type of textile jacket with more air flow might be preferred.

I originally had "all in one" jackets but have since switched to system jackets as I prefer all the flexibility they offer. That works for me much better....but YMMV.

Also, if possible...try these on before purchase.

I'd love one of those.

From what I read from advrider and other, it was first year issue (2018?) and RE addressed this with newer one. Also if you don't need off-road capability, have a look at their 650 twin offerings.

Not sure there is a gain in protection necessarily by going up in price. The elbow and shoulder pads that came with my $200 Alpinestar mesh and my $250 Scorpion leather look just as good as what I got in my $1200 Aerostich. For back pads the nice pad material like Forcefield is pretty reasonable aftermarket https://fortnine.ca/en/catalogsearch/result/?q=forcefield

And that being said, if you really want protection you have to go airbag. A quarter inch of padding is still not much if you hit hard

You are getting nicer construction and features, zippers, pockets, etc. Goretex does cost money but it means you don't need to pack a rain suit, which is certainly nice on a trip, at the cost of turning you into a bag of sweat putting around town on a hot day.

Yup.

In his case, he's paying for the Gore Tex.  You could have the exact same jacket with the exact same protection sans Gore Tex for half price.

Going up in price might also get you better armor.  CE1 vs CE2.  Or thicker/better materials (say, 740D vs 1000D material or Kevlar stitching (good) vs Dynema stitching (best).)

My armor, including chest/back is Forcefield CE2.  My back/chest exceeds CE2.  There's lots of good stuff out there! D30, Sas-Tec, Cee-Soft, etc

And yea...I really like Hit-Air inflatable.  Best on the market IMO since they were the only ones who have massive head/neck stabilization built into it..which the others lack.  In a crash, our flimsy necks with a heavy helmet on it might not do so well!!  I'd likely NOT recommend an inflatable if you're goofing off off-road since you tend to fall off LOTS!    :rofl2:

One of the mags did a test with it.

And the footpeg (!) fell off during testing.    :rofl2:

I haven't looked into it (at all), but if it's cheap enough, I'd probably still bite.

Before riding it anywhere, you'd want to give it a thorough going over - put a wrench on every nut, just to be sure. And even after all that, I'd probably put together a small tool kit to carry around with me everywhere. Still, I assume it's a basic, simple bike? Should be plenty reliable once you get the bugs worked out.

Yup that is mostly putting on the handlebars. I wouldn't trust a trip nor my life toa junky bike. No when there are lots of reasonably priced quality alternatives.
