LOL, when does it go back?

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

So here are some of my impressions on this year's rental: 2021 Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0

The car:
- Fairly lightly optioned, as far as Porsches are concerned...didn't even have NAV. For those interested the Porsche code is PNTZEWI2, which is how I believe the car was spec'd for a total of $109,000
- Very flashy, the Carmine red is a brilliant colour

The sound:
- So my perspective is unique in that last year I drove the turbo 4 GTS and this is my first experience with a Porsche flat 6
- And yes, without a question the flat 6 sounds better, something even my wife and son noticed
- Simply put, it howls and screeches when you rev it up to 7 - 8 K RPM, fantastic
- Having said that, I still like the turbo 4, but agree with what others have said, not in a $100K car
- I think the turbo 4 would be a great option in a base Cayman or Boxster with a manual

Cayman vs. Boxster format
- I loved the Boxster GTS and top down driving. But I have to say, I would buy the Cayman
- I was smitten with this car. The lines are just gorgeous and head turning
- Plus, the cabin was more airy and the car had better sightlines

That's about it. Let me know if anyone has any questions. I would highly recommend this service if you just want to taste what the Porsche life is like.

I'm torn on whether I would get a coupe or roadster 2 seater. I love coupes, but those days where you have perfect roof down weather are so good.

That's where I'm at.  While the Cayman looks fantastic, ultimately I think I'd want a toy car to be topless...

I remember driving to and from work in the MR2 (MKIII), and then the Z4, it made the day so much better. Commuting in the Exige wasn't as relaxing.  :rofl2:

So did you ask for a 718 Cayman and they happened to give you a GTS or what? I'd consider renting on next time I'm in the GTA.

In your opinion, is the upcharge for the GTS over the S worth it?  I know the 4 cylinder is good, but I just can't get past spending that much money on a 4 cylinder engine vehicle.  For me it's 6 cylinder or nothing.

So what is next for renting?  You going to try for a 911 next time?

Did this at all change your timeline on getting your own Porsche?

You book through an app, and they simply have "Cayman". Then you exchange texts with an actual person. My preference was for a base, than S. I was not aware they would even have the 4.0 GTS. And then when I ask to confirm which model, they said I'm getting a 4.0 GTS...I didn't argue :)

I think I would love a Porsche.  Actually, pretty sure that I would.

But I also thought domestic beers met the standard until those comparatively expensive craft beers entered the picture.  There's no going back.

Ignorance is sometimes bliss.  There is value in being the person who could easily buy the Porsche but doesn't.  I dunno; modest upbringings leave lasting imprints regardless of ultimate income level.

Totally understand this feeling.

Based on my two rental days and countless hours spent on the configurator and on auto trader, I think the sweet spot is either a new base Cayman / Boxster or new Cayman / Boxster GTS. With one caveat: lightly or zero optioned.

Here's my logic. If you look at used 718 Boxsters / Caymans, prices are craze with base models going into the 80s and 90s. GTS stuff is in the 100s. However, you can smartly option a new base 718 Cayman for $70,000 or $74,000 for a Boxster. You get all the Porsche goodness in a nice package. Look at autotrader, 3-4 year old 718s are no less than high $60s

Furthermore, GTS models can be had just shy of $100K new. And they have all the goodies on them already (wheels, sports exhaust, great interior, lower, etc.). This car would likely still sell for close to $100K in a few years.

The S cars don't make sense, financially.

At least that's my logic.

The issue may be in actually getting a GTS. I think allocations for those are fairly limited.

Probably. You'll have to work to get the car.

Yes, the plan was to try a 911, but I'm not sure I will. The Cayman is somewhat attainable, the 911 is out of the too much $ for me.

In terms of timeline. Yes, I'm seriously considering working with the dealer to custom order a Cayman GTS, with few options so that I don't get wacked with the luxury tax next year.

This would be my spec: PN6ZZMW4

But maybe I'm just in a Porsche high and all the excitement will fizzle away in a few weeks and we'll have another year of this thread :)

I can't remember, are you planning to get manual or the PDK?  Did you drive using the paddles or just in auto and how did you find it?  How was the gearing? (I know the complaints are really with the manual)

PDK. The transmission was exceptional. Lightening quick. However, if you're just cruising around, it quickly puts you into 7th gear for fuel economy, which is great. I think I averaged 8 L / 100 KM. But, with a manual you will never drive this efficiently, which in this car is a good thing, because you'll end up stretching each gear and be rewarded with the flat 6 soundtrack.
