That's way overpriced for a 997.2 Cabrio... usually the convertibles sell for ~$10k less than the coupes because they're less desirable, can get a 997.1 Turbo vert for less money and a hell of a lot more car!!

https://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/north%20york/ontario/5_48668599_20111115101047209/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=pl&urp=4&urm=7&pc=K2C%202H8&sprx=500

And for $92k this is much nicer - https://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/mississauga/ontario/19_11762757_/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=3_15_64&pc=K2C%202H8&sprx=500

Agree, that black edition is sweet. Still, with taxes we're talking about $100,000.

You know, this savings for a Porsche thing really drives home how expensive these cars are. Any cars really. When you actually go and save the money to buy a car out right, its certainly hard to let go of the money.

For that $100,000 Black Series, I'd have to earn an equivalent of $200,000 !

Cheap credit distorts everything doesn't it!

I am running into the same emotional struggle with a much smaller purchase. I want an older Miata but I'd only buy that cash... which means parting with savings that can make me more money! At least I don't feel the urge to replace the golf yet

It makes being a car person tough!
Yeah this past summer when I got my GLI and my wife got her Rav4, it's staggering how much those add up to.  But when all you see is the biweekly payment it distorts how much money is going out in total.

I can't remember if you've been through this already on this thread, but why not start with a really nice Boxster/Cayman instead, and trade up every few years?

Yes, I may do that. Only drawback with a Boxter, which is what I'd prefer, is no room for the dog. Laugh all you want :) but for drives I'd like to take my wife and the dog along...

I think I may do what I did last summer and rent a 911 / Boxster for a few day
I love it when a plan comes together.

I might get flamed for this but wouldn't the 2022 BRZ make for a great back road cruiser and be the same price as a 10 year old Cayman.

I get the passion for all things Porsche but the price/value of Porsche cars just keeps getting worse every year. Of course you would keep your eyes open for that one unicorn that is priced fair and needs little to no work but I'd be going crazy sitting on a bunch of cash and not having fun driving while waiting for a deal that may never happen.

Thought has crossed my mind, many times. I've been looking at Miatas...could get a nice ND with the reworked engine...could be fun.

You're right about the price / value thing on Porsches...soooo much money

The other thing is, the recession has yet to hit, and lots of people on the upper end of society have benefitted economically from COVID. So people are spending their vacation/going out money on new toys and renos. Everything is sold out, and used cars/bikes are through the roof. Give it a 12-18 months and there will be a glut of stuff on the used market due to a stronger recessionary impact.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

I hear you. Plus it could be a l lot of fun to mod. That car with a turbo kit or supercharger would be wicked.

Didn't someone (Norm?) on the forum do just that? And blew the engine?

Yep, that's kinda where I am, why I've not done anything. Sure, I "could" go and drop $80k - $100k on a "toy", but can I really justify it to myself. It's a completely emotional purchase as I've always wanted a 911 but hard to justify having that much $'s when I already have 2 "decent" / "fun" cars that I don't want to get rid of.

Friend who bought the new GT4 probably did it right. Bigger outlay upfront but drive for a couple of years and sell for close to purchase price if they become desirable as the last non-turbo'd model.

That's what my issue will be!

And as much as I love the 911s, they are starting to price themselves out of my "want".

I've been looking at GT-Rs instead of 911s lately.....(996 TT excepted)

Same problem with us and the Z3M.  Have to get a sitter to go for a drive.   :P  ::)  Time to amp up the seat count.

I once saw a Boxer poke its head up from between the seats on a Vette convertible.  No idea what he was sitting on but looked hilarious.   ;D

Same problem with a Miata, dog or passenger, not both.   Bella likes to go for rides with me in it, Beetle thinks cars should have roofs and won't get in it.
I used to drive around with Tater in the back of my 911, she didn't like it much but there are dog seats, until the roll-bar went in.

But yeah, why not get an older Porsche and trade up eventually, like, a 944S2 convertible is a nice car and isn't going to depreciate.

Another thing, it's a lot less worry to take a sub-$20k car to the track vs a $50k car.

This seems a bit bizarre to me.

This '07 C2S sold on BaT for $37k in 2018:

Yesterday it sold for $121k:

So what you are saying is I should sell all my investments, buy and old 911, and turn it into an off road vehicle and I should double my money in 2 years.

It's interesting that nice early Caymans are around $40k and you can get a newer one (like a 2016) for only $10k more.

Naturally aspirated six, and that sweet hydraulic steering? I can see why people still want the older ones. Having said that, the new ones do look much, much better.

I think there was a year or two with the new body, but still the old engine? Electric steering, not hydraulic, but from what I’ve read it’s still decent. I wonder what those are going for? That might be the sweet spot for me.

That's exactly the model I'm talking about. The 2014-2016 still has the flat six.

Saw a nice 2006 advertised for $22k with 220k on it. Lots of value there if it has been well maintained.
