National Post columnist Jonathan Kay bought a first-gun Cayman: https://nationalpost.com/opinion/jonathan-kay-its-a-pandemic-porsche-not-a-midlife-crisis
I'd totally rock a first gen Cayman.
I would too....but would be nervous with that M96 engine.

2010 (987.2) would be the way to go.
Hmmm, makes me wonder if there are any popular engine swap options.  I know with some 911s people have swapped in some IS V8s with success.
It costs just as much to do a swap..not much point IMO.

Either way, you'd be looking at $15-$20k
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Nice article - his daughters seem pretty cool.

"Dad, I wanna learn to drive stick."

Most parents: search for driving school that offers manual transmission training.

This guy: buys manual transmission Porsche.

I don't know, I'm not a purest so personally I would love to swap in a more powerful, cheaper to maintain, and more reliable engine.  Now if I had a choice I'd likely choose something from the Toyota/Lexus portfolio, maybe the V8 out of a wrecked IS-F.  That likely isn't possible without a lot of money and re-engineering but it's a fun thought.

makes sense...they built a new one here in London too (recently opened)...it used to be located in the Cadillac/Hummer dealership (after it closed) , but they built a new location in the south end and now has that corporate look to it (opposed to repurposing another building).

Shocked one hasn't been here before TBH.

Porsche has slowly but steadily been expanding in Canada. In the last ~15 years they've opened new dealers in Halifax, London, Saskatoon, North York, Markham, Oakville, Brossard, Richmond, Langley, and now KW. I think they've basically doubled the number of dealers.

All thanks to the popularity of their SUVs and the Panamara.  Hard to believe they likely wouldn't be around without those offerings.

And now the Taycan. It's kind of shocking how few actual sports cars most Porsche dealers stock. I know that buyers tend to order them, but still. The Halifax dealer has one used 911 - that's it.

Classic example of what's wrong with the used Porsche market today and why I may pass on any purchases this year.

https://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/niagara%20falls/ontario/19_10446446_/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=261_63_263&sprx=-2

This 2009 997.2 4S Cabrio has been on sale for over a year. Some of you may already be familiar with it. Originally listed for $87,000, which I though was crazy and likely why it just sat there. Classic example of "I know what I have".

Randomly I checked on this example today, and low and behold, seller upped the price to $92,500!
I love it when a plan comes together.

LOL. Claims it's a "special edition" but I don't think that's true. There's nothing particularly special about how that car is optioned either. The GT silver paint is nice but certainly doesn't add $20k to the value.

Maybe he just doesn't need to get rid of it but will for the right price.

I can only assume the latter there Oliver.

Yeah given the market with Covid it’s probably not a horrible idea to cool the jets on used sport car purchases this year.

Of course if the right car and deal comes then so be it.

But man. I dunno. 90K for a 10+ year old Porsche? I feel like I’d pay $70 for it.

$70 yes, $90 no.

This is likely an outlier, but still.

That's way overpriced for a 997.2 Cabrio... usually the convertibles sell for ~$10k less than the coupes because they're less desirable, can get a 997.1 Turbo vert for less money and a hell of a lot more car!!

https://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/north%20york/ontario/5_48668599_20111115101047209/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=pl&urp=4&urm=7&pc=K2C%202H8&sprx=500

And for $92k this is much nicer - https://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/mississauga/ontario/19_11762757_/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=3_15_64&pc=K2C%202H8&sprx=500

Agree, that black edition is sweet. Still, with taxes we're talking about $100,000.

You know, this savings for a Porsche thing really drives home how expensive these cars are. Any cars really. When you actually go and save the money to buy a car out right, its certainly hard to let go of the money.

For that $100,000 Black Series, I'd have to earn an equivalent of $200,000 !

I can't remember if you've been through this already on this thread, but why not start with a really nice Boxster/Cayman instead, and trade up every few years?

Cheap credit distorts everything doesn't it!

I am running into the same emotional struggle with a much smaller purchase. I want an older Miata but I'd only buy that cash... which means parting with savings that can make me more money! At least I don't feel the urge to replace the golf yet

It makes being a car person tough!
