I nearly pulled the trigger on a high mileage (but fantastically modded) Cayman S about a year ago (I think I shared the details with Hannibal) but missed out on it because I was slow on the draw.  The price was really, really right.

Have now been presented with a similar 2009 Boxster S.  Had a "big" accident ($30k) very early in it's life (not rebuilt status, normal status).  Has somewhat high mileage (120k), but has $5k+ in very desirable mods that would make this a very rowdy weekend car.

I'm really, really tempted.

But doing so would mean scratching the plans for my "50th Birthday" car....whatever that car will be.

Hold off. There will always be Boxters…are you willing to share your 50th budget?

$60-$70K or so.

But I'm also struggling to decide if I keep the Prime as a winter/errand/ family car and get something more as a fairweather/weekend car.

Of sell the Prime and get something that can legit be used year round.

That’s right, this conundrum.

Well, my son just got his G1, so if you want to pass on the Prime let me know.
I love it when a plan comes together.

^^Prime is already for sale.  I found a car I was interested in (a different one) and put the car up in the hope of a quick sale.

PM me for my text number if you want to chat about it.

Ha!  I was just about to say "Don't start running those man-maths around TurboBob or you'll be signing on the line before you know it!  He's a terrible influence!" (it's no wonder we're such good friends).   ;D ;D

;D I was just lying in bed last night thinking about all of the terrible auto related financials decisions I have made...  :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

I seem to be able to justify anything.

P.S. I think it was because I saw an early Gen Coupe yesterday, and thought to myself, "Why did I get rid of that car again, I really liked it." AND it was fully paid for. Stupid brain.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

In your opinion, is the upcharge for the GTS over the S worth it?  I know the 4 cylinder is good, but I just can't get past spending that much money on a 4 cylinder engine vehicle.  For me it's 6 cylinder or nothing.

So what is next for renting?  You going to try for a 911 next time?

Did this at all change your timeline on getting your own Porsche?

Based on my two rental days and countless hours spent on the configurator and on auto trader, I think the sweet spot is either a new base Cayman / Boxster or new Cayman / Boxster GTS. With one caveat: lightly or zero optioned.

Here's my logic. If you look at used 718 Boxsters / Caymans, prices are craze with base models going into the 80s and 90s. GTS stuff is in the 100s. However, you can smartly option a new base 718 Cayman for $70,000 or $74,000 for a Boxster. You get all the Porsche goodness in a nice package. Look at autotrader, 3-4 year old 718s are no less than high $60s

Furthermore, GTS models can be had just shy of $100K new. And they have all the goodies on them already (wheels, sports exhaust, great interior, lower, etc.). This car would likely still sell for close to $100K in a few years.

The S cars don't make sense, financially.

At least that's my logic.
Something for you to consider, if you were to get the base model 718 Cayman/Boxster you can go right over to APR tuning and get their APR Plus tune, keep your original powertrain warranty but get 50+ hp and 20+ torque, all for the small cost of $2K.  I'd likely go with the 718T and get the APR Plus tune right from the get go.  Cheaper than the 718 S, you get a bunch of performance goodies, and still have money left over to upgrade the interior if you want.

Even a base 718 isn't a slow car.  Power isn't the problem.  It's the feel and sound of the little 4-banger that can't replicate the H6.

Totally, but MOOORE POWER can cure a lot.  Plus he has already said that he doesn't mind the 4-banger sounds.

Interesting trend going this summer though, as I've been watching several 911's and SLK-55's that are priced quite high... they're not selling... the same cars have been up since early May & none are moving off Autotrader or Kijiji... eventually the prices will just have to drop since these cars are just NOT selling. Hopefully the trend starts to come back to earth soon.

For interesting cars, it seems the 'easy money' comes from putting it up  on one of the US auction sites.

There's a '99 M Roadster with more miles than mine on PCARMarket right now and it'll be interesting to see what it goes for...

Yeah, though you always get some bozo's in the States saying the car can't be imported into the US, or it's too much hassle now due to COVID, etc... I had no luck with my 951 on Cars & Bids last September, but maybe it would've moved on BAT, hard to say, but similar ones were fetching $18k US at the time on BAT. Mine tapped out at $12k US on Cars & Bids, or somewhere around there.

Hey, that's a good thing for us as at least it keeps a bit of a lid on selling prices, in Canada.

You got it! We downsized from three to two kids. It was time.
