I am a fan of the 02-06 generation because it's typically accepted as the most reliable; the next generation, 07-14, offers some more modern features and slightly better fuel economy, but the earlier examples (07-09?) had issues with valves and the AFM system that gets costly. They also seem to rust more, or at least more visibly.

With the 02-06's, they're all very solid....there's a 4.8L, 5.3L, and the 6.0L. Given that these things are cheap, I'd look for a higher trim level truck, just for the sake of having some extra luxuries, and a bit more power from the 5.3L or the 6.0L vs the 4.8L. The Yukon Denali and the Escalade were 6.0L only in Canada and all of them were all-time AWD. The 5.3L trucks could be had with push button 4x4, which some prefer.

We chose the Escalade because Mrs.Firm preferred the styling, and the interior is a bit fancier. We've both been extremely happy with it, and will likely keep driving it until big gas guzzlers are outlawed, lol.

Our is almost pristine (was a Western truck), but my brother has an 03 Escalade that's pretty well beater status (though it's also been super reliable) and that's revealed one big (IMO) advantage to the Escalade...The extra plastic cladding on the short wheel base models hides any otherwise visible body rust.

I'd also be tempted though to seek out a Tahoe Z71...5.3L, push button 4x4, some off-road goodies, and sleeker looking body colored bumpers.

As predicted, GM's golden years for cars and SUV's was '00 to '05.  Anything after that is mostly junk, and that includes their trucks (AFM, mostly).

LOL reviving this thread again. We have acquired a 8 week old lab. I am guessing once he grows up it will be hard to fit him, 3 adults and 2 kids in either the model 3 or the bmw. The BMW has to go. Any recommendations. I think i can stretch my budget to max 10k tax in.  Wife still works from home and kids will walk to school so this will be used mostly in evenings when we take the dog somewhere and a few long trips during the summer.  I am guessing usage will be 10KKm a year.

2 kids and a dog, might as well get a disposable minivan. Spend $5k on a Grand Caravan, when it fills up with various kid goo, throw it away, get another $5k minivan.
Lighten up Francis.....

 :iagree:

That is what the GF and I will be doing...probably a $5k Mazda5, and when that dies, another $5k Mazda5 until she wants to buy new...she says the new Venza Hybrid looks nice.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Get a minivan, a great appliance to go along with your model 3

Transmission, at 350,000 I had tranny problems, I knew other people that had their tranny replaced a couple of times
This was GM country, there was a lot GM workers in the area , in the early 2000 , there was 20,000 people working there

Rent a minivan for a weekend and try it , you will enjoy all the room in it

To be fair, 350 000kms is a LOT, and if you didn't have tranny problems up until then, I'd say that's pretty good.  Even the million mile gen2 Tundras had a few transmission rebuilds throughout their lifetime.

But yes, I echo the sentiment of getting a minivan.  It's really the ideal vehicle for the situation.

^This. Also, the transmission in most of them is the 4L60E....super common and cheap to repair/replace. Denali and Escalade got the 4L65E which was beefed up a bit and generally tends to hold up a bit better.

Certainly the sensible choice. I'd be wary of a used Caravan, know a few that loved their old cheap Caravans but more that absolutely hated them. If they go bad they seem to strand people a lot

Siennas though are one Toyota that's cheap used

Thanks. So i guess i will start looking at DGC's and Sienna's. Although i really like the 4Runners, Escalades and even the sequoia's. Wonder how they compare in price

4-Runners are in such high demand that their pricing is out of whack.  Any 4Runner you find for less than $10k will be far above 250 000kms, and sometimes way over 300 000kms.  The Sequoia is a little better, but Toyota never really sold that many of them, so they're hard to find, and you're not going to find the more desirable 2nd gen Sequoia (larger, 5.7L V8) for that price at all.

Here's a nice, mid-mileage DGC. https://www.autotrader.ca/a/dodge/grand%20caravan/etobicoke/ontario/5_48291790_20161019123710550?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=ts&sprx=100&modalXS=1

This one is an SXT, so it has some desirable options, like the rear climate control, power rear windows (they're fixed, otherwise), and the UConnect 8" screen.  Ugly hubcaps, though.  These came with alloys from the factory, so not sure what's going on there.
