Once I have more parking spots I'd totally jump on a manual transmission previa... though I'd want to store it indoors lest it be eaten by Ottawa salt

Routan is another option.

2010 Volkswagen Routan 7 passagers,
https://www.kijiji.ca/v-autos-camions/ville-de-montreal/2010-volkswagen-routan-7-passagers/1436999020

Price: $ 4,188

Yep, a good option too. Most had the 4.0L engine, a good motor but it does have a timing belt, so bank on having it replaced if no records of it being done.

So a buddy has a 2007 Sienna, wife drove it and said it's too big for her. So GC and Sienna are ruled out.
I guess I am looking for smaller SUVs now with third row seats that are good only for little kids.

How is the journey?
Any other SUV's with really cramped 3rd row seats that would meet our reliability and budget requirements? (Lol I mean small sized)

Highlander...

Or 7 passenger Rav4.

The absolute best bang for buck in your price range would be Suzuki XL-7. V6, leather, rear dvd, favorably reviewed...and cheap!

The early ones (early-mid 2000s) are scarcely larger than a Forester.

Yeah, try a Gen 1 Highlander. Then if the size is okay, watch for a seven seater.

The Gen 1 is only 184” long. But it’s super efficient inside. The rear seat has lots of room and the cargo area is a big box that holds a shocking amount of stuff.

You lose the underfloor storage with the third row, but if you need an occasional use third row, it does the job.

Yeah. The Gen 1 is a very manageable size for it's interior space.

The 3rd row is fine for kids but adults would not be comfortable for any length of drive.

One that's a bit odd but small, cheap, anf 7 passenger is the Chevy Orlando. My cousin bought one a few years back as a commuter, put over 80k on it without any issues. Think he paid 6k used with 110km (was a rebuilt title) he loves the ugly thing lol.

May as well add a Mazda 5 with a stick to the list. It'll be the most fun to drive option by a wide margin.

Would a Kia Rondo qualify?

I was going to recommend 6 passenger Mazda 5 if you can find a decent non rusty example in that price range, and available with a manual if you want one. Chevy Orlando has 7 passengers standard and also had a manual available although rare. 2nd gen Kia Rondo had a manual but it’s only a 5 seater standard, 7 seats are available in the upper time levels.

You’re probably not looking for manual though but thought I’d throw the info out there. .

My parents had a first gen rondo until recently.

It was fine but watch for suspension issues.

Honestly though, is it worth changing a $5000 car you know to avoid taking two cars twice a month?

+1

If she doesn't like the size of a van...  Rondos, mazda 5 and all those are super small 3rd row. Almost useless penalty box.  Something gotta give.

The rear seat in the 5 might be better than the Highlander.

Wow, ok.. Mazda is doing some magic in there.   Front neighbors has one, never bothered to look.  What about a ford flex...lol

I sat in the back of my old Mazda 5 with my old brother in law, I’m 6’1” and he was an inch or two taller. First hour was ok, second hour we had numb butts. Lol.

Look for a 2005-2007 Highlander.

Nothing to look out for outside of the usual wear and tear on brakes and ssuspension components

A friend of mine had a Rondo V6 and there were some spendy engine parts he had to buy for it.
