2007 or 2008 Hyundai Entourage/Kia Sedona has 7 seats and is under $5000. Parts are cheap and simple to service.

Easy to find the Grand Caravan 2011+ in that price range. You can also find plenty of 2008-10's too with the old 3.3 V6. I'd put that engine up against anything from Toyota, they are extremely durable, easy to fix and maintain, and get decent fuel economy.

Early Pentastars had head issues (but by now those issues would have already become apparent) and I see them often enough at auction with top end noise due to bad rockers.

What year did they fix the problem?

The head/cam issues were a issue in 2011-12, the problems would have likely already happened and been fixed by now. The engines seem pretty durable overall. One really nice thing about the Grand Caravan is the stow n go seating, once you have it you'll really love it.

At the 5k price point I'd get a Sienna over a Grand Caravan all day every day and twice on Sunday.

Why do you say that? Just curious.

1) I think the Sienna is built to a higher standard than the GC.  So as the miles rack up I assume the GC will start to feel old and tired long before the Sienna. And the GC will likely require more repairs, even if it is a few years newer.  Case in point, my 12 year old Highlander feels and works like new (granted it only has 180k km).

2) Perception of the average owner.  The Sienna was a good bit more expensive when new so people that were buying were buying for the long haul.  That means they likely took better care of them.  I think a lot of people view the GCs as disposable and rode them hard and put them away yet.

Admittedly they are my own bias' and there are likely exceptions to both points.

Forget all these vans...Get yourself the nicest 02-06 Tahoe or Tukon you can find in budget. Practically bulletproof, plenty of seating and space, supremely comfortable and even kinda respectable on gas assuming you stay away from the AWD 6.0L and stick with a push button 4x4 5.3L version.  Spend a couple hundred bucks on a nice aftermarket Bluetooth setup and call it a day.

Thats a good call. See these all the time with 350-400k kms on them. Only thing to be worried about is tin worm, but thats easy to inspect for.
Lighten up Francis.....

Agree 100%. These things last forever and are stupidly cheap and easy to repair. Did a H20 pump in our 05 Suburban in 1/2 hour and the part cost $120. They're not that bad on fuel either.

My 15 year old Highlander has over 350K and feels barely older than when I bought it eight years and 220K ago.  These vehicles were built to last, period.

I’d buy a $5K Sienna with the 3.3L 5AT and while it would be old, it would be a fine vehicle.

Yep, I had one of those! Had a factory icemaker and two sunroofs back when two sunroofs weren't cool. It was gutless and dangerous in crosswinds, but reliable. Couldn't imagine they're all that safe in a crash lol....oh, and our old buddy the "tin worm"...he LOVES old Toyotas!
