I’d amend the Highlander search to 2004-2007. They have the nicer 3.3L 5AT driveline, TRACS, and other upgrades over the 2001-2003 models.

The third row is a kids row, no doubt. But only vans and van sized things have comfy third rows.

There’s no real issues with a Gen 1 Highlander. No major flaws or anything to be on the lookout for. Just history and condition. The V-6 has a timing belt so check for last change. Having a shop do a complete timing belt service isn’t terribly expensive but it’s a buying bonus if it’s done.

The rear wheel bearings usually go out 250-300K. Not hard to do, OE parts are expensive, good jobbers to be had.

Rear sway bar bushings fail at higher mileages too, cheap and easy to do.

Interior materials wear like iron.

They’re actually pretty simple vehicles with over built quality parts. The suspension is struts all around. The brakes are easy to do. Toyota used quality fasteners so servicing things usually goes easily. The only total PITA is the rear plugs on the V-6. I had my tech do them when I had the timing belt done.

Toyota indie techs are everywhere now and those older models have tons of good aftermarket parts (Aisin and Delco, etc) that are often OE suppliers.

One thing to check is the intermediate steering shaft. If the steering clunks at full left and right, it’s shot. Dorman makes a cheap jobber part that has a rep for being better than the OE one. I replaced mine with the Dorman at 150K and 220K later it’s working great. Not a hard job if you can work well under the dash.

Don’t buy a four cylinder one. The engine has some issues and the fuel economy isn’t really much better than the six anyway. The extra power of the six is very welcome. Despite being lower in power than many newer SUVs, the HL also weighs a lot less, so it actually has some punch.

Another thought. Original Pacifica.

Not sure if they are much smaller than a  GC.
What about MDXs/pilots from a reliability perspective? Do they seat 7 ?

MDX and Pilot are a solid alternative to Highlander.  Maybe just one tiny notch below in reliability, but they’re still great vehicles. Just be wary about transmission issues in early ones.

Like Toyota’s, Honda’s have premium pricing in the used market. Bargains are rare.

Nope, 6 passenger, at least most of the ones I’ve seen come in this configuration. Not sure if there were 7 passenger models.

We have a 2006 Mazda MPV GT bought new in 2007.  Been a great van in the traditional sense of a 'small' minivan before 'grander' ones became the norm.

The 3.0 V6 has performed really well over 175,000km and with Krowning regularly which deferred the rear-fender rot this generation of Mazda products all seemed to get early and aggressively.

The middle captains chairs can slide together to form one bench and also slide fore and aft for more leg room in the third row.

We typically keep the third in fold and stow position so its like a REALLY roomy station wagon.  Third row up still left us room for a big dual stroller when the boys were younger behind it.

Driving dynamics WERE ZOOM ZOOM compared it's competition in the day, too!

Unfortunately the aforementioned rust issue has wiped most of these off the road, found this one (more than $5k) but only 33k KMs:

My brother has one of those. I got a ride in it when I was in Vancouver a couple weeks ago. Seems like a nice little vehicle.

The rear seat in the 5 might be better than the Highlander.

Wow, ok.. Mazda is doing some magic in there.   Front neighbors has one, never bothered to look.  What about a ford flex...lol

Flex is huge.. probably even longer than a GC.

Well, she dosen't like the interior of the older highlanders, says she rather take out two cars when needed.
Then she saw MDX's (on autotrader though and thought they were decent).
I researched a little bit and it looks like 2005 to 2009 were the only years when MDX's had reliable transmission. Before and after were/are crappy.
The BMW is due oil change and front brakes and some minor work which is going to be $700-$1000. If i find a really nice MDX then i wont do the work. If i do it, i will keep it for atleast a year and start my search..well i dont know when.. lol.

Having owned vans since 2003, the MDX drives bigger than an Odyssey (poor sightlines) but with much less room inside.

If you can find one of these that is not rusted through, they are right-sized between say a Mazda5 and an Odyssey and are fun to drive. Least reliable car I owned, I must say, and that includes three German cars.
