Off the beaten path option - Gen 1 4wd one-owner Mazda MPV

NO! I bought a 94 MPV that only had 225xxx km but it had its transmission rebuilt at 91xxx and 160xxx. Then the timing belt slipped while I owned it.

Don't feel bad, the transmission was on schedule to crap the bed again anyhow.  ;)

Well, she dosen't like the interior of the older highlanders, says she rather take out two cars when needed.
Then she saw MDX's (on autotrader though and thought they were decent).
I researched a little bit and it looks like 2005 to 2009 were the only years when MDX's had reliable transmission. Before and after were/are crappy.
The BMW is due oil change and front brakes and some minor work which is going to be $700-$1000. If i find a really nice MDX then i wont do the work. If i do it, i will keep it for atleast a year and start my search..well i dont know when.. lol.

If it's just going to be smaller kids in the 3rd row, MDX should be fine size-wise.  It's big, but I didn't find the outward visibility to be too bad with properly adjust mirrors and a pair of convex blindspot mirrors.  My friend's 2011 MDX with the 6 speed was doing fine until his wife wanted to trade it in for a new X5.  My 2008 MDX was great until I drove it too hard for its age.  Coolant mixed with transmission fluid while my wife was driving one day and transmission started slipping.  Perhaps it wasn't me, but I didn't want to be left stranded when kids were in the car with me, so I got rid of it as soon as possible.  I still miss that car sometimes.

LOL reviving this thread again. We have acquired a 8 week old lab. I am guessing once he grows up it will be hard to fit him, 3 adults and 2 kids in either the model 3 or the bmw. The BMW has to go. Any recommendations. I think i can stretch my budget to max 10k tax in.  Wife still works from home and kids will walk to school so this will be used mostly in evenings when we take the dog somewhere and a few long trips during the summer.  I am guessing usage will be 10KKm a year.

Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.6 Pentastar V6.  You should be able to find tons of well equipped vans in decent condition for that $10k.

Minivan. It will do all.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Wildcard:  Mazda5?

Not a 7 seater, and you'd be hard-pressed to fit a dog in along with 6 people.

my buddy had one of those...they aren't really that big, which was fine for what he wanted at the time...it's kind of a mini minivan.

He said 5 people.

2 in front, 3 in back and dog gets the way back part all to himself!   ;D

Chevrolet Orlandos were all 7 seaters, as well as upper trim level Kia Rondos.

Does doggy really need a seat? Prius V would fit a lab in the back. Or any wagon really.

The Mazda 5 doesn't have 3 seats in the 2nd row. So it's out.

I'm biased but I'd get the nicest Highlander in your budget.

10K/year occasional use. GMT800 SUV....For well under $10K you can buy the nicest Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban/Escalade in your area and it'll last forever. Yes, it'll burn more fuel, but at 10K kms a year it'll take many years to out spend the savings on initial purchase vs. spending the full $10K on something else.
