Used seven seater for aroud 5K
« on: October 31, 2019, 03:45:50 pm »
We now have a situation where we have to drive with a total of 4 adults and 2 kids specially on the weekends. (Not every weekend, maybe 2 times a month). When this happens, we usually take both cars which is a bit of a PITA. Given the situation we are thinking of selling the BMW and getting a seven seater SUV or Minivan.

Wife just started work from home so her daily commute has reduced to pick up and drop kid to daycare which will also disappear next year as the kid enters the public school system.
I expect the vehicle to be driven ~5K and surely <10K a year. We will do a couple of road trips in the summer

We are not in a rush to buy anything and can wait for a good deal whenever it shows up.  Assuming we can get ~5K for the BMW, what vehicle should i look out for on kijiji and autotrader.
The only requirement wife has is Bluetooth and I have is good reliability and low cost of maintenance.

Any ideas on what to look out for? Grand Caravan, Sienna. How are older KIA van's? Any 7 seater SUV's in the mix (i know they can be more $'s than minivan's). Is the mechanical quality of Grand Caravan good enough?

Thanks.

I would say Grand Caravan.  I'm not sure if any of the Pentastar units are old enough now to be that cheap, but that's the direction I'd go.  The Pentastar/6-Speed vans seem to be pretty well sorted.

What year onwards were the Pentastars good?

MY2011 is when they started putting the Pentastar in the Grand Caravan.  I don't think there was ever a bad model year for the Pentastar.

2011+ Grand Caravan's aren't unreliable vehicles.  Their interior quality is quite shite, the base models have almost no features, and they're very creaky/noisy, but they're pretty decent basic transportation.  We were happy with ours.

For $5k, looks like you'll get some pretty high mileage vehicles.  I've found a few in the Toronto area that are up around 200k kms.

^^That one has 2nd row Stow N Go, and more importantly, rear climate control.  You want to keep an eye out for rear climate control.  Vans that weren't equipped with it don't have vents going to the back, so the center and rear seat occupants freeze in the winter and roast in the summer.  The corollary is that they have coolant lines and a second heater core in the back, so it's an additional failure point.

Hard to beat a Grand Caravan. Find one owned by old people so it is cleaner.

I think the older Kias were not great on fuel and likely have higher parts costs.

What about a Journey? Same kinda thing, no?

Same kinda thing, however the 3rd row is a lot smaller than the Grand Caravan, and when it's in use there is no trunk space.

There's no beating a Grand Caravan if you need to haul 6-7 people in relative comfort on a budget.

pretty sure a Grand Caravan has quite a bit more space inside than a Journey.

If only two trips per month, I’d stick with taking two vehicles rather than gambling on a $5k used van. Depends if the BMW has been solid for you or not I guess.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Yep.

They are out there for 5k. Usually with 250k km or so. At least in Ontario.

At the 5k price point I'd get a Sienna over a Grand Caravan all day every day and twice on Sunday.

If full size, he could go with an older V8 4Runner. They had 7 seats, didn't they?

Why do you say that? Just curious.

Weren't V8s dropped in the early 2000s?

Easy to find the Grand Caravan 2011+ in that price range. You can also find plenty of 2008-10's too with the old 3.3 V6. I'd put that engine up against anything from Toyota, they are extremely durable, easy to fix and maintain, and get decent fuel economy.

Early Pentastars had head issues (but by now those issues would have already become apparent) and I see them often enough at auction with top end noise due to bad rockers.

The 3.3L does not have much power but super durable. Designed by the same person as the old slant six!

I think 175hp, which wouldn't do much to motivate the 4400+lb van.

But if reliability is the name of the game, it's a good choice.

What year did they fix the problem?
