New Goodyear Winter Tires: Goodyear WinterCommand
« on: October 04, 2019, 04:27:28 pm »
I had to buy a set of winter tires and rims for my new (used) car. 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.

Goodyear WinterCommand tires. I will be getting them installed on October 26, 2019. There are no reviews about this tire at this time. I'm curious to see how they perform and will provide updates when I have them. $175 per tire.

The rubber is as fresh as you can get them. As per the link below, they were made available March 2019.

I've been told they are replacing the Goodyear Ultra Grip tires. I didn't want to buy the most expensive tires (wife is on maternity leave) and didn't want to buy the cheapest because the vehicle is pretty new compared to the other car.

Blizzaks and X-IceIII tires seem to be the highest rated and are available through numerous shops...Nokian are also rated well, but limited availability likely hurts them a bit...other big brands like Goodyear, Motomaster (made by other good brands), Cooper, General Tire/Continental, etc are also very good...all will be better than all seasons...get the best set you can afford and you should be fine.

Good looking tire. The tread geometry seems like it should be effective in slush and quiet too. In any case a good deal for 175 bucks IMO.

Also very much depends on where you live, do you encounter a lot of ice or a lot of snow, that makes a huge difference. Some places you can get away with some cut rate, Walmart chinese made "winter tire" and some places you would want some studded tires.

I live in Toronto, ON. Lake Ontario is around 10 minutes south of my house. Lots of snow some days of the year (up to my knees). Roads are plowed but you still get slush, ice, etc.

A major concern I have his getting old rubber. I've read that there is no law in Canada that says when a tire is expired and they can sell it as "new" if it's never been sold to anyone before. Rubber degrades over time. This was the newest design of a tire that I could find easily without having to read the date of manufacturing on the tire.

as long as you are buying from any reputable dealer, they should be fine.

I had Goodyear Ultra Grip winters, a few cars ago. Pretty good in all respects, rated at Tire Rack as somewhere between X-Ice 2 and X-Ice 3 at the time. If this is a replacement for that, its probably better.

"10/10 for the strangest reason to buy a tire.". I guess some people think that. Here is my rationale. It's costing basically $800 for four tires with tax. I don't want to pay that price on something that was made several years ago.

Refer to this Global News article regarding retailers selling old tires as "new". This article is from 2015 and they were selling tires as "new" even though they were manufactured in 2010, 2011 and 2012. That hardly qualifies as "new" in my opinion. The rubber still degrades with time.

https://globalnews.ca/news/2338584/canadian-tire-and-many-other-retailers-have-no-policy-on-age-of-tires-sold/

Try stretching a new rubber band, it does it no problem. Try it on an old one and it snaps pretty easily. I simply want peace of mind because these tires are going on the car that my 3 year old son and 4 month old daughter ride in.

Well....

1) I don't think being a year old matters. Especially for winter tires that last 4 seasons at best.

2) If you're buying from a shop with high turnover they will likely be "fresh".

3) If the tire store sources old ones refuse to pay for them. I'm sure you could check before they mounted them.

I'm sure these Goodyears are fine. But I'd go with the WS-90s based on personal experience with Blizzaks, they're also new for this season.

I've never tried Bridgestone tires before. How has your experience been with that brand for their winter tires? How did they perform?

I've run the WS-80s on two cars. I can't imagine how a winter tire can be better.
Only downside might be lifespan, but I only get 3 seasons out of winter tires and I'm buying 15" tires so it's a non issue.

I also have the DM-V2s on my Highlander.  Really impressed with them as well.

Four seasons at best?  Maybe for you, but that's not the norm AFAIK.

Blizzaks and the Michelin X-Ice xi3 - can't go wrong with either choice.

3 seasons? How much mileage are you putting on them in a season? Do you keep the tire pressure at the proper PSI?

This is a mid-tier winter tire, set to be in the moderately priced category... I'm sure it will be just fine for where you live and will work well on the Sante Fe. It might not be a top performer like the Blizzaks or the Hakkapalita's, but it will be as good as most of the mid ranged winter tires.

my Blizzak WS70s have 7 seasons on them...i'm only replacing them this because of age and the tread is finally down low enough to start making a difference.
