Into the USB cable.

I'd actually find that to be a pain in the ass.

But...why?  The car doesn't have Bluetooth??

Android Auto currently only works when the phone is plugged in.  It's quite silly actually, it should work through Bluetooth.

I'm not sure that Bluetooth has the bandwidth required, hence why wireless CarPlay uses wifi.

I see Wi-Fi Hotspot  offered in some new cars. Would that do AA/ACP wirelessly?

In theory yes but right now the only models with wireless CarPlay are from Audi, BMW, and MINI. There might be others for 2020 as well.

Land Rover does too but I'm not clear about functionality.... It's  a marketing description not technical  :)

BTW...there ARE phone cradles with a built in USB plugs...so you'd be plugging in the phone everytime it goes in the cradle.

I have a cassette-cord thing to plug my phone into and that seems pretty good to me.  But, I'm also one of those rare people that can pull the tailgate closed...   ;D

Are you stuck in the 90's???  :o

I don't want to change out the stock headunit in the Highlander.  I leave it at trailheads for days or even weeks and don't need even the slightest excuse for someone to do something to it.

They all get weird at some point.

For $60 you can have Bluetooth and keep the stock head unit in the HL. But feel free to keep on keepin' on.

LOL... this derailed thread helped me in a weird way to solve another long time annoyance with my car and coincidently enough it was prompted by a post by Tortoise again. Thanks man!

The hands-free in my Outlander now works with my phone!

The hands-free in my Outlander now works with my phone!

There is procrastination and then there is 12 year procrastination.

 :P

 2+ years procrastination actually but long enough....

The BT in the Outlander stopped working with my last phone (2+ years ago).... or so it appeared. It would pair successfully initially but not reconnect upon restart of the car. I researched the forums at the time and found out that other people had similar issues with their new phones. I made peace with the idea that there must be a compatibility problem, old BT, new phone/OS and left it at that - I don't drive the Outlander regularly so no big deal.

When Tortoise was suggesting Johngenx to buy a BT device for his old HL, I thought I might look into it and see what's out there that I can get myself instead of the non-working built-in BT, but then I thought well.... there were quite a few updates on the phone since I got it 2 years ago, let me give it another try before I buy a new device.

Surprisingly enough..... paired the phone and checked to see if it reconnects after the car is shut off and restarted ... to my surprise, it did. Tried it multiple times and boom... it worked every time. I can make and receive calls no problem...

If it wasn't for this thread and Tortiose's post probably I would've not tried it again to discover that in fact the BT still works (at least now it does).

UPDATE: In keeping with my rotating stable of vehicles, the Oryx White Golf R made way for an Indium Grey Golf R back in January. Under normal circumstances it too would already be gone and replaced with a GTI I have on hold (Autobahn 6MT w/ Plaid seats  ;)), but with the current situation, I think I might have this lovely R for a while longer.

Figured I'd provide a few more thoughts on the car after now spending ~7 months with it.

- It's an absolute back road monster; I have never driven a car so un-phased by changing surfaces, mid-corner impacts, etc., including the G70
- To the point above, the car feels immensely stable and secure, but almost to a fault; no matter how hard you try, you can't really upset it on dry roads
- Unsurprisingly, 4MOTION proved hilariously fun in the snow. Compared to the G70's rear-biased AWD, it takes more work to get sideways, but slides are also slower and easier to hold
- The car continues to be endlessly versatile, from my 150 km daily commute (when I was doing it!), to light-speed back-road blasts, to carrying my 8-month pregnant wife comfortably to-and-fro
- Of the two, I much prefer the look of the grey; since the Golf R has no sunroof, the white ended up looking a little too appliance-like from a distance. Grey fixes this
- I've never had a turbo car that pulls so hard to redline, very enjoyable to wind the engine out

All told, having now driven this extensively, I remain of the view that the GTI is more "fun" in perfect weather - lighter, more tossable, less serious-feeling. Needless to say it's also a much stronger value. But if I could only have one car, I can say without a hint of bias that this would have to be the one for my current stage in life. I'll be sad to see it go, but look forward to the MK8 arriving next year... it's going to be incredible  ;D

Great update. I think the Golf is a great car. And I love the 4motion...

Now, if you could get golf R wagon here next year that'd be great thanks  ;D

I agree. Love my GTI. Didn't need the performance of the R, I have bikes for that.

Why do you swap VWs every 6 months? Do you work for them?

Great update!

If the next GTi comes with everything my GLi has, at a similiar price, (including adjustable suspension et all) then its likely to be the replacement for my wife's Elantra GT.
