And GLI!

The red-headed stepchild of the GTI. So sad.

:D

Absolutely correct

You replaced the Elantra Sport?  Anything wrong with it, or just wanted something new?

Yup. Zero problems with it, just the road noise and ride which for most people driving compacts wouldn't be noticed. Back problems helped to get me back shopping again, far too early. The Dealer owns a Hyundai and VW shop, that helped.

This is WAY upscale. Especially with the Dynamic Chassis Control and ability to custom set things. Butt dyno says its a bit quicker (as it should be), however I haven't tried much. The ES was decent too in performance. Mileage is almost the same. A recent 1 1/2 hour trip got 6.7 L/100. The ES would do the same in 6.2-6.4L/100.

The Jetta GLI intrigues me.

For the price and where it sits in the marketplace, I don't see any direct competition.  LSD (so vital), manual option, good steering, decent looks.

The Accord Sport is there, and although it definitely has the motor, it misses the handling part (and no LSD!).

For $33K and change, the GLI is a great buy.  At $40K, it isn't but the smart money goes for the base car.

Despite this, I would still lease it.
I agree about the GLI and I want to test drive it.

The Accord 2.0 6spd was a big disappointment.  Good power but lots of tire spin and horrendous clutch and shift feel. The Throttle house guys summed it up nicely.

luxury

??

I think a high trim GTI or an R is a pretty nice place to be, and they have lots of nice features. It's not spartan like a Civic Si or Type R.

True, the GLI is a great value (unless you're leasing).

Lease rate for 4 years is 0.99% so pretty good. However, the residual is 45% which is fairly low (end of the model year?)..... so assuming no extra discount and $0 down, it would work out to just under $500/mo tax in. Not great but not that bad either.

I agree with you 100% as I feel the GTI/R is a nice place to be and better than anything mainstream IMO, but I would still not use the word "luxury" to describe it. Maybe "premium"?

I just mean in comparison to the GTI. The GTI has a better residual, though the rates are a bit far apart right now.

Anyways I didn’t know people still used the in car navigation now that Apple Carplay and Android Auto are so prevalent.

I don't know anyone that actually pays for data. I tried the phone apps initially (work phone has data), but plugging the phone at every trip gets old real fast and I simply stopped using CarPlay altogether.

Too bad more companies aren't using wireless CarPlay yet. I know BMW/MINI do.

If one does multiple short trips per day, well it does become a real chore!

Am I missing something?  Why are you plugging in your phone?

I must be thinking of something different....

Into the USB cable.

I'd actually find that to be a pain in the ass.

Android Auto currently only works when the phone is plugged in.  It's quite silly actually, it should work through Bluetooth.

It only takes few seconds to plug the phone into the cable. What's the big deal? Cheaper too instead of paying $$$ for a built in unit and then subscription for traffic info - which is the main reason I use navigation in the first place for my daily driving.

They have Android Auto Wireless...which requires WiFi.

In that case, I'd get a tiny portable router and plug the USB cable into THAT....and then you should be able to connect wirelessly.  I think.

Similar to this idea here, except I'd use the portable router (about the size of a deck of cards) instead of an old phone to plug the USB into.

I don't think any of the factory units have wireless AA yet.  Some aftermarket units do.
In a couple of years, it should all change over to wireless AA/ACP.

Ditto with Apple CarPlay.

My Audi comes with a neat, black thick coiled short USB cable that you can leave in the car (instead of the fragile white Apple cable). However, CarPlay only comes bundled with Navigation  ::) ... which I did not outlay $2,500 for. Messy wires are a pet peeve so I don't bother with the phone apps.
