Well, here it is, my new commuting weapon - a 2019 Golf R 6MT in Oryx White. This one also has the Black Styling Pkg., which pairs black Pretoria 19" wheels with carbon fibre mirror caps. I've driven all manner of Golf models, including just about every non-R variation of the Mk. 6 and 7, but never the R itself.
After 250 km, as I strongly suspected, I'm completely in love. Bias aside I truly think this might be the best-rounded car available on the market today.
I'm sure everyone is quite familiar given how many people have these on the forum, but here are some high-level observations so far:
- It feels like it's carved from a block of steel
- All primary controls have lovely weight and accuracy - steering, brake tip-in, clutch, shifter
- Powertrain is sharp with excellent throttle response and no rev hang; AWD makes acceleration idiot-proof
- Suspension strikes a great balance between comfort and handling. My commute is 70 km each way of varied country roads. I set the Custom drive mode to everything in full kill save for the dampers in Comfort, and it's sublime.
- Plenty quick for a little car. Not quite as violent as my old G70, but feels more nimble (as it should)
- Everything is just so damn easy to use
- As with all Golf models the interior is lovely; the R seats in particular are exceptionally comfortable and supportive
- I'm a sucker for ambient lighting, and what's here is subtle but very nicely done
- Quiet, ACC works well, and it tracks like a locomotive - great qualities in a highway car
- Lights are excellent - especially love the ultra-bright front signals
- Loving the Oryx White's deep pearl finish
- Fits the big rear-facing car seat quite well
- Hatchback!
All-in-all, it just feels like the car is perfectly suited to my needs. Better pictures to come, but here are some I've snapped so far.
