Does Toyota own Forbes?
No, they just build really good vehicles.
In terms of reliability, yes.
In terms of driving engagement, no. I always joke that they are actually so boring, they can't even build sports cars without the help from others.
Will never buy one unless they stop feeling like toasters, or if I just need a beater.
As long as you do a proper engine break in of your car and take good care of it (not going past 3000 rpm when the engine is cold, following maintenance, etc) your vehicle will run good. I’ve owned all sorts of different vehicle brands and the only car that was problematic for me was the Subaru STI and that was because I had bought it used and modified to around 400hp. Obviously a Chrysler product is not gonna be as reliable as a Toyota, but it should still last you atleast 5 years if you take care of it.
I see you've never owned a RX-8...
Railton
If you really want to talk about RX-8...
A lot of people are aware of the engine fail rate, especially the earlier models. Here is the thing: there are some more knowledgeable RX-8 owners who suspect that the crappy ignition coils were the cause of the "engine failures."
A saying you will hear in the community is that "bad coils kill cat, bad cat kills engine." The early coils are notorious for not lasting more than 30~50k km and they will eventually start misfiring. Clueless dealers then just replace the engine without inspecting the coils and the cat. Doesn't help that Mazda had Caterpillar do the remans and they were really bad. It's much better nowadays since the remans are made in-house in Japan.
Oh, and half the people in North America don't know how to check engine oil level. Rotary engines burn engine oil as a part of their design. You can imagine how this will go.
TL; DR: if you are just dailying the car, replace the coils, inspect(or gut, if you can put up with the smell) the cat, check oil level often, add premix if you want, and forget about being stranded.
And check the engine compression with a rotary-specific compression test before buying any used examples.
