The Best Travel Mug
« on: July 19, 2019, 03:45:08 pm »
I've trust The Sweet Home (now The Wirecutter) for their reviews. And I took their advice when buying travel mugs. I've had a couple for about 4 years or so. And today I was reminded why the Zojirushi travel mug is so awesome.

Yesterday at 2pm I filled my travel mug with ice. I refill it at work with water as needed. The ice always lasts my shift. I forgot the mug in the car when I got home last night. I just went to the car, which has been sitting in this stifling 90+ degree heat for 12 hours. The inside of the car was a blast furnace. Despite this...the water was not only freezing cold...but the ice was still intact. AMAZING!

Previously, I had burnt my mouth on coffee that was in the mug for 12+ hours. Mighty impressive.

If you need a travel mug...this is the one IMO.

Yes I've had a zojirushi for about a year and it's great.

If anything it's TOO insulating; if I fill coffee hot from the coffee maker before leaving for work, even in the winter busing, the coffee will still be TOO hot by the time I get to my desk.

I'm sure it's great.  But I can't imagine how angry I would be when I eventually lost my $40 mug.

Also, I'm not really a fan of flip lids that are in your face when you drink.

Yes, it REALLY insulates.

IQ can drink coffee that hot..but I can't.

Hasn't been an issue. It's well out of the way when you drink...

I don't think losing it (for me) is an issue. Though I suppose anything is possible.

The lid is mildly annoying.

Losing it would suck but I can't stop myself from enjoying nice things over that risk! Otherwise I'd be driving my parents' rondo instead of the golf.

I suppose with the obligations and distractions of a family you may be more likely to lose it

In which way?

I don't even notice it...it's not like it touches my face or anything during the 2 seconds I take a drink.

Or is it just the fact that it's there?

Well, my wife has a habit of leaving them at work never to be seen again.

And you're right, the kids have a way of adding distractions.

I really like Zojirushi stuff (used to have a simple Zojirushi mug, and currently have a rice cooker and water heater) but no way I’d want that mug. The lid would drive me crazy.

My favorite mug is this Thermos: https://www.thermos.com/sipp-by-thermos-vacuum-insulated-stainless-steel-travel-mug-16oz-stainless-steel-black.html

Keeps my coffee plenty hot enough, and you just drink out of it like a regular mug. If you need to spill-proof it for whatever reason, there’s a simple button on the top.

depends on the length of your nose  ;D

In all seriousness it does get close to my nose when I'm trying to empty out the last drops. it's just sorta uncomfortable. But the insulation makes it worth it. Tortise it's great for a day on the ski hill. You can leave the mug in your car and it's still hot on the drive home

That's all well and good, but there's a 0% chance I have any coffee left by the time I get to the hill.

Yeah, what’s “best” depends a lot on how you use it. This Zojirushi seems more like a vacuum flask that you can also drink out of. Great for throwing in your pack and going for a hike, or leaving in the car all day while you ski.

I just want a mug that I can drink out of like a regular mug. I don’t want to flip a lid or push a button just to have a sip of coffee.

Indeed.

I drink out of double walled mugs at home.

A bit out of the question to travel or drive with one though. :)

We used to have some of these at home:

Really liked them, but they kept breaking and it wasn't worth replacing them.
