Do I need new tires? (Pictures)
« on: June 30, 2019, 04:55:21 pm »
I bought a used car in April and I just noticed my front right tire is worn down on the sidewalls, and has 'tears' in 3-4 spots. None of them are deep, and the three other tires are fine. Looks like the previous owner may have driven on them when they were low on air? IDK

My question is will these last until I put winters on (mid-November), or should I swap them out ASAP? I was originally expecting to put about 9,000km (5600 miles) on them before swapping them out in November.

myself, i'd put new rubber on there...if you're tight for cash, perhaps some shops have a decent used tire you can use in the mean time for less money?

tires aren't one thing you cheap out on or skip replacing when needed.

Which vehicle? The Tacoma or Fit?

It also looks like repeated curb scrub. (Park by touch?) The rim looks to show curb rash as well.

First thing I would do is swap the tire to the rear, to alleviate load on it. How are the other three tires? How much life do they have left? Are they on their last legs?

If the three remaining tires have useful life remaining, then I suggest checking local tire shops for a used replacement. If the remaining three tires are close to their useful limit, then I would shop for a new set of four tires.

Lastly, as Jeffer stated, you don't want to cheap out on tires.

It's the Honda Fit. The three other tires have a season and a half left on them.
I generally buy the best tires I can - I just didn't expect to have to buy some so soon.

I'll check local shops and Kijiji for a used tire. Good idea. Thanks guys

yea, if the other tires are still good (check the date codes on them as well), you can likely find a decent used tire that should get you another non winter season fairly easily...Honda Fit vehicles are pretty common, so there should be some options there for you.

At the first glance I was gonna say "check the wheel alignment" but upon a closer look it seems the whole side wall is affected which could be caused by someone who likes to park close to a curb. I'd personally put on at least 2 new tires to avoid a somewhat possible highway blowup, if you drive on a highway at all.
P.s. Fit-size tires are cheap to buy new, e.g. General RT43 are well regarded by consumer reports and are quite a bit cheaper than Michelins.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Dumb question. Does the Fit have a full size, or a space-saver spare? If it's full size, then swap the tire for the spare.

The mark 1 had full size.   The mark 2  had an inflation kit with a bottle of gunk  or a full size spare as an option.   Don't know what happened later.

Update:
My other three tires definitely have a lot of tread left. Enough for this year and next.
I found a set of two tires with ~50% tread left for $80 from a friend. They are in good shape. I'm going to throw those on for this year, and re-evaluate next year.

If I were to buy new tires, I was leaning towards the General RT43 or Yokohoma Avid Ascend GT. both are cheap and well reviewed.

Thanks for the help guys

I'm very pleased with my DWS06 tires. They are smooth and quiet on the road. I have no complaints about their handling and stopping response. These continental tires are a bit stiff but not too much compared to my previous Cinturato P7 all-season tires.

I'd get an alignment done after replacing that tire.
