Jack Pads
« on: April 07, 2019, 10:35:32 am »
The VW has reinforcements in the pinch welds as jack points.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a jack pad?  It's it even necessary?

I don't bother but if I did then a hockey puck with a groove cut across would probably be my first pick.

Yeah, get the jack pad. Just jacking up my then-new GTI once without a pad was enough to mess up the pinch weld.

I’m sure a grooved hockey puck would work fine, but I wouldn’t bother. Twenty bucks on amazon for that other one seems reasonable.

They make rubber jack pads with grooves. The one I bought came in a 2 pack. One round, one square. $15.

Good value for what it is...

Agreed.  My MINI has nice square integrated rubber blocks, but the TT was easily messed up if I was not super careful.

Hockey puck and a hack saw worked perfectly well for me. I've used it on the Forester, Mazda, my dad's RX400h, and my brother's Sienna.  No bent welds.

My solution to a jack :censor: up the pinch welds on my van was to get a vehicle with an actual proper frame.  Ain't no way a jack is effing up the frame on my Tundra.

Hmm, I guess I had to see that one coming, eh?

FWIW, Toyota went ahead and replaced a bunch of frames on trucks that were long out of warranty.

Got some from Princess Auto.  Worth their weight in gold when jacking the Miata as the jack points are made of butter.

X2 on the Princess auto pads. That being said have not used them in years as the Ridgeline has centre jack points front and rear which raise the entire front or rear end if jacked from these points. Read your manual as I can't believe it is the only vehicle made with these.

The Land Rover is easy with a frame, they even mark the frame midpoint so you can raise one whole side at a time.  No pads there lol.
