please help with the wheel key
« on: March 30, 2019, 10:41:34 pm »
Hi,

I have a wheel key that is damaged (I guess one of the previous mechanic used too force tighten the bolts).

How, it is not 100% fit for 1-2 of my wheel bolts so the auto mechanic doesn't want to risk removing it.

I am wondering where I can get a replacement or asking for guidance how I can remove the wheel bolts safely with this wheel key.

Thanks!!

The dealer will do it for you. I don’t bother with wheel locks anymore.

:censor: like this is why I do my own wheel changes, with two electric jacks, a torque wrench and everything. It gives me a chance to inspect suspension components, lube the caliper pins, check on the pads and rotors. Even though my rotors are original, there is no more vibration when braking which I attribute to both, new pads and even 90lb torque applied to lug nuts. But I digress. It seems these can be unscrewed with a big enough TORX bit. Homedepot, Princess auto or Napa might sell you one.

Pound a socket onto the lug and hope for the best.

Has always worked for me, but you'll be sacrificing the socket.

A welder will do nicely.  Weld a bolt in there so you can get that off.

That’s what the garage did with mine, and I threw the rest of the wheel locks away.
