Clearly the Tiguan isn't loved here.  Though I do see a fair number of them around.  I like the styling and the size but it really needs more power to be competitive (due to its weight).

I laughed at the comment about not buying one because the door locks are too loud.  That's whole lotta hyperbole.

Yep.

Quote
Speaking of unpleasant sounds, a propos to nothing: the door locks on the Tiguan make the most almighty clunking sound when they engage automatically at speed that I just about jumped out of my seat every time. This might be one of the more unusual gripes I’ve had with a car in some time, but I feel the need to bring it up because I truly don’t think I could live with it.

The Golf locks are surprisingly loud too.

Isn't the Tiguan selling 4:1 to the Golf Wagon in the USA? Thought I heard that somewhere.

Wouldn't surprise me.  Golf sales have fallen off a cliff.

Trivially easy to do... just put the GTI or the R powertrain in there.    But I suppose all the people who insist on regular gas would whine and complain

I wonder if they don't want it to compete with the Q5.

Or if they are unwilling to sacrifice the fuel economy in light of CAFE.

People in this segment care more about connectivity and interiour space than what's underneath the bonnet......

But hey, it sells.

It’s more like 6:1 - which is why VW is killing the wagon.

Interestingly, I just peeked on the motorisations available in Germany and it looks like a 230PS powered variant has popped up for gasoline.

But I doubt that will make its way over the ocean, too bad. That would probably address the power issues that you guys mention (never mind the 110 km/h speed limits).

I think it is just forum members that have issues with the power. Lots of these around just like Subaru Outback/Imprezza/Crosstreks. Some people don't give a :censor: about power.

Just some anecdotal evidence: two of my friends, both car people, have each recently leased new Tiguan’s for their wives, both of whom are not car people, and both of whom are extremely happy with the car. (funnily, the two friends have extremely different enthusiast rides: one has a very ‘built’ Nissan Titan on BFG’s (or similar), the other, a pristine ’11 A4 Avant S-line.)

Both couples tested a lot of different CUV’s, and the Tiguan figured pretty low in the value/features for the husbands, but the wives obviously ranked the Tiggy very high indeed. This is not at all an observation on gender preferences or anything, more about car people vs. non-car people; and VW has obviously nailed that latter demographic. Low-but-acceptable power, good fuel economy, fashionable-ish nameplate, nice design inside and out, roomy for its footprint, fun colour choices (that bright orange that they both got, funnily enough). This Tiguan is obviously not an enthusiast – or even a value-laden – car, but VW knows enthusiasts aren’t buying the bulk of their inventory, and this refreshed Tiguan's feature set seems shrewdly devised.

That Habanero orange is great. I wish they offered it on the Golf/GTI.

So, is VW coasting on their reputation of having nicer interiors than other 'mainstream' models?

I imagine they're cutting costs so they can recuperate from Dieselgate.

They're cutting costs because North America is the most competitive automotive market and is very price sensitive. This cost cutting has been happening long before diesel gate (see the sixth generation Jetta).

This is true.  But there has been more cost cutting since Dieselgate.  The Mk. 7.5 had a bunch of things removed from it vs. the 2015-2017 models.  They were mostly minor things like the drawer under the drivers seat, locking glove-box, carpeting in the door pockets, under hood insulation and stuff like that.

I'm wondering if those were just cut from Mexican built models or from European market models as well.

Just for the North American market.

I wanted to see if those things were cut in the latest Jetta (MQB), but then I realised the Jetta isn't even offered for sale in Western European markets  :rofl2:

The Tiguan actually isn't a huge success in Europe either; it's too expensive and stingy on features compared to its competitors, and the European press hasn't been totally kind to its driving dynamics either.
