Summers for the Sequoia
« on: March 26, 2019, 12:56:30 pm »
So I'm starting to look at options for summer tires for my Sequoia, including:

  • Running my Bridgestone Blizzaks year round
  • Cheap Chinese tires less than $400
  • Motomaster APX $533
  • All weather tires from Kal Tire and sell the Blizzaks next autumn, $685-705 until March 31
  • Whatever cheap and used I can find on Kijiji

So it seems based on the long range forecast that my winters will stay on until April and go back on in October. In that 5.5 months, I have 4,000km of driving planned and that's why I'm considering running the Blizzaks year round. But most of those kms will be hard ones towing a trailer and braking might be an issue.

But I already spent $800 on my Blizzaks and don't really want to spend much on the summer set for the very little driving I would do.

So most attractive option would be to go with cheap Chinese tires. These look good, I would have to drive to Calgary to get them.
https://www.kijiji.ca/v-tires-rims/calgary/265-70r16-265-7016-brand-new-set-of-four-all-season-tire-for-sale-372/c4060672

There's Motomaster APX currently on sale for $533. Looks ok.

Kijiji is a mixed bag, some ok choices but I found some tires with a DOT date code of 0802 like what the hell people.

Going with all weathers year round is another attractive option. Kal Tire has $75 off any set of tires (except Michelin, BF Goodrich, and Uniroyal) right now installed by March 31 and I should surely be able to get $500 for my Blizzaks this winter. No the winter traction won't be quite as good as Blizzak but I've been vocal about how uninspired my Tree felt with them so I may as well get all weathers. Choices include Nordman WR which I liked on my old Odyssey, Sumitomo Encounter AT, Nokian Rotiiva AT. I would also save $160-200 a year on mount and balance since I'm not planning to get a second set of rims in either case.

Thoughts?

Lanvigator Performax? ???  :rofl2:

I dunno, tough choice. Would be a shame to wreck those new Blizzaks in the summer heat. And for towing? I think that would suck.

If you thought the Sequoia wasn’t a great winter performer on the Blizzaks, I think you’d like it even less on all-weathers. Sounds like another sucky option.

So, maybe those Lanvigators are the way to go after all? But I’d keep scouring Kijiji for a deal on tires and rims. Even if the tires are bad, might be worth it just to get the second set of rims. You’ve got the garage now, so why not do it the proper way with dedicated winter tires & rims?

I'd probably get a good set of all-weathers, or a winter rated A/T and run that all year. As you pointed out, it saves the hassle and cost of mounting/dismounting tires twice a year.

I put a good set of Continental TerrainContact A/T's on the Escalade 2 years ago now and have been running them year-round without a second thought. We don't get as much snow as you do, but we had plenty of ice this year and they performed great IMO, no concerns. Wear isn't an issue yet (have about 20K on them) but I will probably replace them earlier than I otherwise would since they do winter duty.

What I really wouldn't do is (a) tow in the hot summer with winters installed and (b) tow in the hot summer with some cheap/used kijiji units. I also don't think you'll like the el-cheap China tires....in my experience cheap tires can really ruin the driving experience.

And given how long and hard your winters are I'd just a second set of A/S tires and still run the winters.  If you thought the Sequoia wasn't great with the Blizzaks, it's gonna be way worse without them.

I'd go with the APX's. They should last you quite a while so in the end it will work out to less than $200 a summer.  Which is hard to argue with.

Oh, I just read that you don't plan to get a separate set of wheels... Which complicates things.  Still, I think you'd find it to be a handful on All-Weather tires in the winter.

 :iagree:

I don't think I'd want to be towing on a hot day with Blizzaks.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I think he should just move south so he would not have worry about winter condition  ;D

Oh, I forgot, I'm mulling around the idea of getting a cheap winter beater later this year so the Sequoia would be more a summer toy with occasional winter use. So that might sway me towards getting all weathers.

Would it be $66 a summer if I ran them for 8 years? Plus seasonal mounting and balancing... ok that's like $250 a year.

sorry, but this thread is hilarious.

all the money spent on a Sequoia, which may see limited use if even more money is spent on a winter beater (with all its added running costs), plus the money spent on a new trailer and winter tires for said Sequoia...and you're talking about hitting up kijiji for used tires or some cheap Chinese ones??

just get some decent tires and be done with it. :)

Get the best AS tires you can afford, don't skimp especially since you'll be towing! Find cheap steel wheels for next winter & then it's just a wheel swap, not a tire on wheel swap.

Id get another set of rims and a decent set of highway/all terrains and keep the Blizzaks for summer. Also what size of tire are you looking for?? I would go for some Cooper Evolutions or SXTs if I were you. Not too expensive but still a great tire.
Lighten up Francis.....

it's moreso the theme:

  • Cheap Chinese tires less than $400
  • Whatever cheap and used I can find on Kijiji

There are reasons I don't want to buy tires for the Sequoia:

  • I don't know how long I'll keep it. I get the point though that I should be able to recoup about 2/3rds the cost of the tires.
  • I've purchased three sets of tires in the last 12 months totalling over $1800, I'm done with buying tires.

I do have two BF Goodrich Radial Long Trail T/As sitting in my garage with lots and lots of tread left. They are 10 years old though, but they are in good shape with no cracking on the rubber.

We'll see. We're going to continue to have near freezing morning temperatures well into April so I don't need summer tires yet.
