for those bemoaning the price of the top trim RAM, take note, this Ford is $86k.

"Electric cars are too expensive!" hops into $86k brodozer.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I knew people cross shop gas CUVs and trucks, but didn't know people cross shop Tesla Model 3 with these things?

Depends on the person. Some people have a budget, and look around to see what fits, others have a market segment they want into and then shop price.

In my old neighbourhood, there were a lot of very expensive trucks that hadn't carried anything in their beds that couldn't have gone into the trunk of a sedan, but they wanted the image.

The model 3 will not haul a load of top soil, 2x4s, nor haul my trailer. Plus, dumping that much money into a poorly executed mazda 3 knockoff is ridiculous

Please don't insult the Mazda 3 like that!

I think that Sir O's point is more that tons of people are willing to spend big money on trucks/SUVs whose capabilities they don't use, but will also say that EVs are too expensive.

meh...no one buys the leather lined limited trim to go off road and haul gravel and plywood...it's a "luxury truck"...it's not a shop truck...i'll buy a bit of towing a trailer, etc once in a while, but 95% of the trucks i see on the roads have one person and are hauling air...they are today's sedan...period.

I think that is sad because if one chose a sedan they would be using far less fuel. I would love to know if there was a national statistic comparing fuel mileage
from say the 80's to now.The national average of all vehicles together. I bet it isn't any better now. Just my opinion.
I presently own a truck but not of the F-150 variety.

today's vehicles get much better fuel economy and emissions than they did 30 years ago...however, there's also a lot more vehicles on the road...it is quite possible whatever improvement was achieved per vehicle is simply offset (or exceeded) by the sheer increase in the number of vehicles now on the roads.

In a given category, cars get better fuel economy and power than they used to get. But, buying preferences have shifted to far larger vehicles with much worse fuel economy, so fleet fuel consumption has gotten worse.

To move up to Ultimate Kona EV from Ultimate Kona Gas, it's close to 100% increase in price.  I think that's why most people say EVs are way too expensive still.

3 out of top 4 best selling vehicles in Canada in 2018 were full size trucks. I think that's because there is not much, if any price premium over comparable mid size CUV for example, that plus image.  I believe more and more people are choosing these 70-80k trucks in place of loaded A6, 5 series, E class sedans etc for the same money.  Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just what seems to be happening.

If you look at it that way, it's less of a big deal. The big lux cars (or more likely CUV/SUV's) don't get Prius level mileage either

I suspect that a lot of people believe the trucks are simpler than the imported cars and suvs.   Not to mention closer dealers...remember Sailor and Hammy living where there are few or no dealers for proper cars. ;)

Pointless....

IF there was a thing such as an EV truck AND it cost $80k, it would make sense to compare.

When we say EVs are too expensive, we are comparing within their own categories - e.g. Kona EV $50K, Kona ICE $26k....

Not everybody shops that way. Some people set a price then look at what they can get. If they've had a series of sedans they may decide it's time for something different. They may look at what their neighbours bought and decide that a minivan, SUV, quad cab pickup, or whatever the current trend is would be a nice change.

It was especially noticeable when the Chrysler minivans showed up. Dad's old neighbourhood was full of sedans. Within a few years almost every driveway had a Chrysler van in it. They went through the same cycle when the Explorer and its four door competitors came out, then crew cab pickups. The neighbourhood children had long since moved out, but that was the trend to follow.

The Ram 1500 Limited is a direct competitor to this truck.  Sure, it may not have a 450hp V6, but it has a 400hp V8.  Competitive enough, I would say.
