If Nordman WR (budget Nokians) is something you'd consider, they were pretty good on my Odyssey.

Went to Canadian Tire today to get quote for Motormaster SE3, and Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady.  For tire size P235/60/R17

(installed tax in, environmental fees, 5 year warranty)

Motormaster SE 3 - $876

Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady - $1054

Was deciding what to do, when I see some Motormaster SE3 on clearance, P225/60/R17!  So a little more narrow.  I don't give a crap.

Tax in $469 for the tires.  Appointment next week $25 a tire.  So $113 plus the $469 = $582

Pretty happy with that.  Although no extended warranty on clearance tires.  Oh well.

Just check the load rating. Good deal though.

the load rating?  Not sure what you mean?  Something I have never looked into.

They’re not only narrower, they’re also not as tall. Not a huge difference, but it’s there.

Load Index is a measure of how much weight the tire can carry. You don’t want to go lower than what came as OE on the car. Don’t know about CT, but a lot of places won’t install tires with a lower load index.

Yes they did inform me it was 1.8% difference.  Rule of thumb is 3%.  So I am not worried.  And Autos did a review of this tire.  Kind of interesting.

Diameter is fine. Load rating is probably not. That tire in 225/60R17 has a load rating of 99. Your van is likely calling for a minimum of 102. If CT will install it for you, you’ll be reducing your van’s weight carrying capacity or risk a tire blowout.

Let's see.

99   rating is 1,709 lbs.
102 rating is  1,874 lbs.

2016 Grand Caravan GVWR is 6,050lbs.  Curb weight is 4,510 lbs.

1,709 x 4 = 6,836 lbs
1,874 x 4 = 7,496 lbs.

Personally, I wouldn't do it if you're going to have any cargo or family in the car.  Doesn't leave much of a margin.  Also, the tire ratings are at MAXIMUM pressure...and you don't run the tire at maximum pressure.  Now if it's only ever you...and only you...nobody else driving that thing...it's up to you to roll the dice.

Looks like the stock tire size for a 2016 Grand Caravan is actually 225/65R17 and Chrysler specs the pressure at 36 psi, which is already the max. I was thinking maybe you could just bump up the pressure in the smaller tires to equal the load capacity, but that's not going to be an option.

Kind of surprised CT would sell these to you, TBH.

So it calls for 102.  And the tires I bought has a load rating of 99.  The difference 111bs.  Definitely not concerned.  If I had 6 people weighing 200lbs.  Maybe I would give it a second thought.  But since this is going to be a work vehicle, most of the time it will be my scrawny ass.  All 130lbs!

The difference is 660 lb, not 111 lb.

^^ this...and that's if you run all 4 tires at MAX PSI (which is unlikely)...as Ron said, it's your call to roll the dice, but one should never really chance it with tires...it's the only thing making contact with the road...the contact patch is only about the size of your hand at each corner.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

^^ Yes, he is running the tires at max pressure already. Dodge specifies an inflation pressure of 36 psi for the Grand Caravan. That is the maximum.

i know, but that's assuming he is regularly checking the pressure and ensuring they are at max pressure (36 psi)...from my experience, that would be a rare behaviour.

Not sure why Dodge is being discussed?  This is for a 2008 Hyundai Entourage.  As mentioned in the title.  So maybe the calculations would work more in my favour?

The GVWR for the Entourage is 2675 kg  The load index is 102

they picked the wrong vehicle based on your profile...but the vehicle itself is mostly irrelevant...the numbers given apply just the same.

what is the max PSI given for the Entourage...simply replace that number for that vehicle if it is different...you'd still be down 660 lbs because of the load rating, assuming you ran max PSI...max PSI may be good for fuel economy, but don't expect a smooth no bump ride.  :P

also, i'm not sure how the tires would wear if at max PSI all the time.

as has been mentioned before, most tire shops will not install tires below OEM spec...aside from load rating, and % dimensions (usually need to be within 3% spec), some won't even do speed rating reduction (but that may be done within reason).

Scott, I don't think it's safe regardless but it's your call in the end.

Speed Variance - 1.7% too fast
Diameter Variance - - 1.68%

So well within the 3% dimension.  Which is why I bought them.  The biggest issue, as we are discussing, is the load concern.

I gave Canadian Tire my model, year, and trim.  Asked about the tires.  They said less than 2%, made an appointment for Tuesday (this was yesterday).  I will talk to them more about it tomorrow.

yes, the dimensional issue is fine...it's the load rating we're talking about here (assuming the speed rating is fine, which i am sure it is).
