Uggh Damn you Costco!
« on: March 08, 2019, 11:00:28 am »
I have been looking for some new summer on road boots for the LR4 in the somewhat oddball size of 255/50-20. The LR requires a XL rating because it has a weight problem and high capacities. As a fun side note the 20s are speed rated as Ys so Costco gets sticky. They will drop down to a V  ::).

I have run the softer Michelins in the past (Latitude Tour HP) but they literally melt away. Long story short I settled on the Defender LTX M/S. Unavailable from Costco forever so I finally convinced myself to try the Bridgestone H/L Alenza plus. In addition they were cheap (About $1000 installed all in).

Today I get ready to pull the trigger and the Alenzas are not on the website anymore but the Defenders are. At about $1460 all in... Costco is toying with me lol.

Their stock changes daily, check over the next few days. Plus, can you wait until rebate season to buy tires? Bridgestone and Pirelli should start next week, and Michelin will be next month.

No I pulled the trigger today. Another thing about Costco. I can retroactively claim rebates 30-60 days from purchase.

I had the LTX M/S on my Dakota years ago (not the newer defender version) and they were great year round, never bothered with winter's even back then on it. After about 4yrs though, winter's were required.

Really to say 4 years means nothing ,
It's the mileage that will wear down the tire not time  ;D

Just ktm can.  Or maybe it's just LR4 owners.

Ha, ha, ha... actually the first winter they were on just for the winter & then the Goodyears went back on for one last summer. After that the LTX's were on full time... so after about 65,000kms of use they weren't good in the winter anymore & then a dedicated winter was put on & the LTX's did ~2 more summers.

I believe Costco's price protection includes the tire rebates.

Costco will even look the other way on the speed ratings if I bring the wheels in loose. The OE tires were Y rated. (Who the hell puts Y rated rubber on a SUV?). Costco will drop one rating so in this case down to a V. The Defenders are H rated.

Kind of sad the Bridgestones disappeared. Not only because $400 cheaper but something different would have been nice. I have used lots of M/S in the past. The costco tire manager said Defenders all the way over the Alenzas so that made me feel better lol. Only downside after that was I decided to grab a couple Kayaks while there on a whim. Why? because Costco.  ;D They were a really good price. Truck FTW.

Three days later the Michelins disappeared again. Glad I ordered, they better not be old stock.

They constantly replenish their stock, they won’t sell what they don’t have. I wouldn’t worry.

Still I always confirm the dates before they install and  to remind them that if they are over 1 OZ in weight they need to readjust. I judge a good balance job by the lack of weights. In the early days of stick on weights I would sometimes find mats of weights  ;D

I swapped the new Michelins on today and put the Blizzaks away. The Michelins are babies, born 7 week of February. Costco did a good job as they are balanced great and they used minimal weight. Painless. Now I just have to remember to keep a lookout for any Michelin rebates over the next month.

I find the Michelins tend to balance very well overall every time I ever bought a set. It seems like their quality control is just that much better and they are able to make a proper round tire  ;D

Michelin starts April 8 if you get their magazine. Pirelli started Monday and Bridgestone starts next Monday.

Thank you sir. I placed my order March 8 so that cuts it a bit tight but they should honour it.  ;D
