Price Negotiation-Help Please!
« on: March 06, 2019, 03:34:15 pm »
Hi there.

I am Sara and I am new to this forum.

I need advice please with regards to used car price negotiation. I live in Toronto and planning to buy a used 2018 Nissan Qashqai. I found a very clean one from the dealership, was a demo and has 10,000 km on it. It is listed at 24000 by the dealership, the MSRP for a similar is 25,200. How low can I negotiate with the dealership before being kicked out? I was thinking of putting an offer for 20,000 ... Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers,

Sara

You won't be kicked out.

Offer anything you want...the worst they can do is say "no".

ok thank you rrocket. As a buyer I want a low price but I also want to be reasonable, the dealership would rarely sell for a loss... so I was wondering within what margin or % one can take the price down without sounding unreasonable... But thanks anyways.

It is last years model. It is a demo with 10,000 on the clock. $24000 is not good value at all!

He's saying it's poor value when you can get new for only $1,200 more.

Start at $20K...why not?

Well, I'd say 20K is about right to start. Remember it's a year old. For example  I bought a used 2017 in the summer of 2017 (so it was still current model year).  It been in service for 7 months and had 15,000 kms on it. I paid right around 80% of MRSP and they gave me a 1 year warranty extension (I bought the second year). In fairness, it was a higher end car so the depreciation was probable steeper.

YMMV

One idea might be to check Autotrader to see what low mileage used 2018's are being offered for.

offers need to be based on market value. if there are none out there, or none at lower prices, good luck getting anything off. you don't get to get a "deal" just because you think that's the way car sales are done...

all the people on here are the first to talk about how the dealership model/car sales are goofy, yet you tell people to offer 4 thousand off a car based on *zero* knowledge of the market, the car, or anything? come on guys... that is a part of the problem.

now, they aren't wrong that the worst they can say is "no"... but if anyone comes in my store offering that much off, they are told nicely, "no, we don't vary much in pricing on used cars". is there a comparable vehicle you found for this price of 20k or what is it that has made you decide on this number? if it is just because you want a discount, unlikely it will happen. again, feel free to ask, but understand the market before just throwing numbers out.

Come off the dealer nut-hugging. You're on crack if you think that car is only worth $1200 less than a brand new car.

That's the real problem here....

The OP is quoting MSRP, not MSRP plus freight, PDI, plus $500 in dealer ad ons, plus license, tire tax .....  So as usual here the details are inaccurate.

The best price on a new SV 2wd auto from a dealer is $27,400 plus tax minus $2K from Nissan Canada PLUS HST.

There is an army of customers seeking demos in all makes and models with no matching supply.  Hence if they are offering this demo for $24K then $23,500 would do it.  That would be a savings of $2K approx over new.  Many buyers in this category consider that enough of a deal for the same MY.

Having said all that don't buy one.  Corolla hatch or Kona.

nut hugging.. love it.

a car is worth what they can sell it for.

we don't know enough to make any decisions. what model? actual demo, or "demo" as said by some green sales staff? that new price, is it the inclusive price on the ACTUAL comparable, or are you taking the pre delivery price of a base package and comparing this demo that is an sv awd? "msrp for a similar" is what she said.. not the same model possibly... we need more info is all I'm saying.

of the 132 2018 qashqai's on the used market within 500kms of me anyways; cheapest one, no matter the package, kms, or history is 20793. and the cheapest of anything usually is cheapest for a reason... smoked in rental in rough shape... at a dealer who charges 1299 admin.... someone who only finances at 9.99% with no cash options... you know.,. the fun ones!

$25200 plus freight+PDI.

I still think $24k may be high but not enough information for us to give you informed advice.

Exactly! It's all supply and demand.

Somewhere in this area is where you'll end up, depends on the car and options.

Don't let them sell you nitrogen in the tires or etching.  It's a scam.

Personally I'd go for new at those prices, probably better financing.  Or, a few years older and save some bucks.

Yes, I saw a number (many) of new ones in the $22k range.

If I pay you $10 annually will you not respond to my posts with idiotic comments?  :)

Firstly, previous to my post the responses had no basis relating to this exact model.  Secondly, the Quash is a POS relative to it's competitors and not a smart buy.   Resale will be in the toilet.  Corolla Hatch is priced equally, but the reality is that the OP has $20K all in and will have to go older.  Those 1000s of Quash ads do influence ppl and not in a good way.  :rofl2:

The Kona is on fire right now so zip possibility on that front.

Personally no, but you got to give credit where credit is due.  This year in particular Hyundai has had some major break outs.  The price point/content is fierce and the Kona is a tough nut to crack.
