Tires for the Highlander
« on: February 20, 2019, 12:26:15 pm »
I am in need of some A/S tires for the Highlander.  225/70/R16.

Looking for cheap.  But not chinese no-name cheap.

Current contenders are:

Motomaster APX - They are made by Cooper and have decent reviews on the CT site and on Redflagdeals.  Plus they're currently on sale at $109 each.
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/tires/pdp/motomaster-apx-tire-0063500p.0063500.html

Firestone Destination LE - Not crazy about them, $151 a piece.  There really isn't much selection in that size.
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/tires/pdp/firestone-destination-le2-tire-3081561p.3081695.html

Pirelli Scorpion Verde Plus - $154 a tire, so I'd probably go this route over the Firestone.  Plus, Costco is good to deal with.  Reviews say they don't have the best treadwear and get noisy with age.
https://tires.costco.ca/Product?lang=en-ca&ItemNo=1138925&SearchID=225%7C%7C%7C70%7C%7C%7C16%7C%7C%7C3%7C%7C%7Cen-ca

At this point I am kinda leaning to the APX.  Since it's cheap I won't be disappointed if they're not the best.  Anyone have experience with these tires?

I think Cooper is one of the better bargain tire makers. They make a snow tire that’s actually pretty good, and price factored in, amazing.

I’d probably take a chance on them.

I've had lower end Motomaster all seasons and winters before and they've been fine. One thing to watch is CT's install/balance fees, and what the warranty is like

I was looking for a cheap all season for our old CRV last summer and got the Ecopia's, they seem good so far, and were cheap with a promo. Costco likely will be having a promo on all seasons shortly.

What I likely should have done is got a premium winter instead and ran it all year round as we don't put a lot of km on it

The Evolution?  A friend just bought a '15 Civic with them.  They get really good reviews.

Thanks for the head's up.  When I was last at my local CT they were charging $15/tire to install and balance.

I think canadian tires brought their install pricing back down to earth to compete with Costco.

Check Wall to Wall tires. Also, talk to Chaos, he's working in parts at a GM dealer & is getting some good prices on tires.

Good Call!

Wall-to-Wall has the Pirelli Scorpion ATR for $500+taxes.  Reviews for them are all over the map.

I am obviously a bit biased, but I wouldn't hesitate to run the APX's.

I had Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on the Escalade when we bought it....They were down to around 30-40% but still gripped well, even in the snow, but they were noisy and didn't ride nearly as well as the Conti Terrain Contact's I installed to replace the Pirelli's.

Thank Firm, if they were noisy on the Escalade I don't want to hear how they'd sound on the Highlander.

Firm, they are on sale now but I probably won't need them until April.  Can buy them now and still get the discounted installation later?  Or is that store specific.

Alternatively, will CT honour a previous sale price if they go back to regular pricing when I want to buy them?  This would be ideal since getting them into the shed will be a challenge with all the snow.

Maybe a dumb question but are General's still considered a lower priced tire? I used them about 8-10 years ago on my SRX and was pleased. As i recall, at the time they were a lower priced option to Conti's, Michelin, Bridgestone etc etc

We've also used Firestone on my daughter's Rogue with good results.

General tire pricing seems to have crept up.  But they can sometimes be found on sale, making them a good deal.

Good chance they'll go on sale again. When I was buying my Duratrac's thru CT it seemed like they'd go on sale every 2nd or 3rd week.

They are lower priced...but not cheap tire in quality. Their sporty tires are garnering outstanding reviews BTW.

I'm going to give them a try on my IS-F...

General is owned by Continental, so that would explain why they are decent tires.

I'm not looking forward to buying all seasons, still wish I went with the Nordman WR all weathers instead. But I think I'll go for the Motomasters on price. If I could find cheaper tires, I'd go for that.

yea, i bought a set for my Rio5 last spring...they are decent tires...the Highlander ones will be different than mine, but i'm sure the version you would get would be similarly good...seem to be one the better rated "lower priced" brands...not cheap cheap Chinese tires, but what i would say would compete with the Cooper, Motormaster and various other "Tier2" brands (if that is a thing).

I hadn't.  I always forget about them.  The two that come up are the Kumho Solus ta11 and the Cooper Evolution HT.  Both are more than the APX, and I am not sure how much better they will be.
