I'm at loss.  What can, and should, be done to people like this?

Santa Ana: At least 4 killed in suspected DUI crash

Ask all the people who were screaming blue murder about the increased police powers in investigating drunk driving. Maybe they have words. I don't.
Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.

How would the increased police powers hand helped in this situation?

Simple to fix.

DUI resulting in death, life sentence, no parole.
DUI, no accident, one year jail, two years no license.  Double each time repeat.
DUI with accident but no fatality, five years jail, ten years no license.

If caught driving while under suspension for DUI, ten years in jail.

That will quickly eliminate the repeat offenders who are the majority of the offenders.

Old powers, new powers, Judge Dredd powers, it wouldn't have made a difference unless the police were on the road with the car at the same time to be able pull it over before the crash. FWIW, the "old" powers would have enabled them to pull the guy over anyways...since they're allowed to do random stops.

And I'm guessing it would have been plenty obvious the guy was drunk by his erratic driving, so it wouldn't have been a random stop anyways.

But Minority Report powers would have seen it coming and they would have prevented it.

Human nature is such that crime is inevitable.  Might as well not have laws, right?  Can't ever stop all crime, after all!
