Sleepers...?
« on: February 06, 2019, 05:27:14 pm »
Hello,

Happy to find myself here! I am looking for some direction, from some objective sources (you ladies and gents!)

Basically, this is what I want: A fun driving, reasonably quick (0-60 in less than 7.5 seconds) sleeper (a car that is surprisingly fast but does not look fast or special, but might look unique)

These are my parameters:

1. Must be a 2 door car. I prefer hatchbacks, but coupes with trunk is fine too.
2. I do prefer forced induction, but naturally aspirated is fine too
3. Prefer manual but if it's good enough, it can be an automatic
4. Cost = $5000 CAD or under, with up to $10K allowed in upgrade money over 5 years. Loans are not an option.

To give you some background, here's an idea of what I have driven and owned and enjoyed:

1. 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler (it was a 4 door, but I understand some Turbo 240's were 2 door!)
2. 1985 Nissan 300ZX Turbo
3. 1988 Chrysler Shelby Daytona Z (MISS this car SO much!)
4. 1981 Toyota Corolla SR-5
5. 1981 Datsun 280ZX
6. 2001 Honda Civic 2 Door (my current blah mobile)

I'm looking to just enjoy daily driving, with enough punch to pass people on the highway and surprise a few folks for fun. Not needing to build an uber racer or death machine.

I'm open to more modern vehicles, if they fit the bill. A 2001-2009 Chevy Cobalt SS Super/Turbocharged was suggested, what do you think?

Thanks everyone!

I always think Mercury Marauder when I hear sleeper.  Does not fit your criteria though.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

I hear a GM with a supercharged V6 under the hood or a V8 swapped Volvo wagon, dealers choice if a 2 or 7 series  ;D
Lighten up Francis.....

A big turbo swapped Saab 900S, or early 9-3. They are quite fast and nobody expects them.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

A modern minivan almost hits your performance criteria.

A mid-2000s V6 powered RAV4 is a real sleeper. 0-60 in 6.5 seconds or so.  :rofl2:

A Nissan Altima Coupe might be a decent sleeper with the V6

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

I'm sure he could find a 2 door Grand Prix GTP for that kind d of money.

And, 7.5 seconds to 60 isn't 'sleeper', that's like every modern car now.  7.5 seconds 'normal'

And for those that don't know, the CD009 is the uprated/improved tranny is from a 350Z....the 4th gen tranny if you will.  Triple cone synchronizers in 1st, 2nd, 3rd...and double cone in 4th.

Under $5k sleeper? I say a Saab is one of the best bets. O perhaps a GM with the SC 3800, preferably a Buick.

Miata is not a sleeper. Neither is a SC400. Come on guys...sleeper.

Really?  You think a SC400 is a car that shouts "performance car"?

Interesting....

The SC 400 you posted, is not a sleeper, lowered, aftermarket wheels & 2 big fart cans coming outta the back, that's not a sleeper looking car to me at all.

Here's a sleeper...
