So, RE the tailgate:  Why?  What is the point of this?  In what use case would a tailgate like this be useful?  I can't think of it....

It just seems like a gimmick that the RAM engineers (or marketing people) thought up because GM is pushing their multi-function tailgate.

I think it would totally be useful!! It's a great idea with the size of these new f'n trucks!!

Here's some pics of it being useful!

^^Okay, but it's not like dropping the tailgate and sliding things over top to the bed is any harder....

Some of RAM's innovations, like the Rambox, their under-floor storage, and even rear coil springs (which facilitates air-suspension if you're into that stuff) is brilliant, and I totally get the appeal/utility of it.  But this?  I don't think so.
Maybe I'm a dinosaur, but I just don't see the point of the extra complexity.

I had an F150 once and I see a point to these side opening gates  - it makes it so much easier to get to tools and other stuff in the bed, and the heavier they are, the more reason there is to pay an extra 1000.

BTW, that RAM Rebel is a great looking truck, and if it didn't cost close to $60k after discounts, I would have totally looked at one when buying my Tundra.

With a spray in bed-liner stuff isn't easy to slide in & out of the truck bed. I lived it with my Dakota for years & it was waaaaayyyyyy smaller than the new full sized trucks are now. Reaching over the tailgate to get something out that was heavy wasn't easy as you couldn't get good leverage on it, with this it's much easier to get in close & get that required leverage.

So GBA, you are a dinosaur  :stick:      :run:

Fair enough.  Maybe I would actually need to use one to see its usefulness.

There is also the additional long-term failure points to think of.  There are a bunch of additional hinges, and some new latches with the potential to fail.  There are also now more seams in the metal that have the potential to rust (and we know RAM hasn't had a great history with rust...rear wheel arches anybody?)

I'm surprised they didn't go with some sort of composites in it... 75lbs more weight is quite a bit. I agree that there is potential problem points with it as well. Don't think that would detract me from buying one though, as I tend to not keep my vehicles for that long... or so it seems I don't  :rofl2:

I could see it being useful for unloading a bunch of sand and mulch.

It was always a pain in the ass when it fell between the box and the tailgate.

$995 seems like a pretty reasonable price, considering most places charge about $500 for the spray in bedliner alone...i can see it being useful for some scenarios.

I read it as 2019 Ram 1500 Malfunction Tailgate. Twice.  ;D

So, similar to the Ridgeline tailgate, except it splits in the middle rather than opening on the end.  More failure points.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Yeah, in a strict definition I don't see the "multi" part of the gate function. It opens and it closes... what other functions does it perform?  8)

They should've used something catchy, like a FlexWay or a MultiTurn tailgate (FCA, feel free to use either)  :)

Yeah...I don't see the point either, seems that they just created extra failure points for the hell of it. As for a step, Ford with all its flaws, still does the best for a tailgate step.
Lighten up Francis.....

Easier to grab groceries which is what a majority of trucks are used for these days. Don't forget the cargo divider.

JFC. Can we stop talking about more failure points. Almost anything that adds functionality is also going to add failure points.

You know what else has failure points? Windshield wipers. Power windows. Air conditioning. Ignition switches. Brakes.

^^^Indeed.  That is in fact why I tend to only buy vehicles with 4 wheel lugs.  That 5th lug is a problem waiting to happen.
