A warm idling engine uses approximately half its displacement in fuel per hour.

The Q5 displays the consumption when stationary.
1.2 litre/h in park or neutral,   1.4 in D  and around 1.7 with the ac/on.  So with a nominal 75 litre tank...a long time.

Seems not to be the case on my 5.0L

At idle, I measure 1.5L/HR

Yeah, I wish that's true.

My uncle's old Skota 2.0 uses about 0.8 L/hr when idling in D or 0.7 L/hr when idling in N.

My RX-8, according to the OBD2 monitor I connected, consumes 1.7 L/hr at idle in neutral. I am not sure how accurate it is, but I am willing to bet it's not far off.

I had to spend a night in a F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 last Winter when a Avalanche closed the highway between Revelstoke and Golden. Idled all night and it used about 1/8th of a tank.

I never travel west of Lake Louise or East of Kamloops without trying to stay in the top half, or even top quarter of a tank.  Roads close there all the time.

Avalanche control maybe? Actual avalanches on that stretch are rare.

They do happen, but as you said, rarely.  It's control, and crashes that cause delays.

Yep, Avalanche control, it was much larger than expected and it completely buried a snowshed. The highway apparently reopened between 3 to 4am but I turned back to Revelstoke around 11 and spent the night in the truck.

I make the trip from Calgary to Vernon on a weekly basis, this is winter #2 and to be honest I really don't mind the trip. I carry pillows, blankets, food, shovels, first aid kit, and most of the time my old Stumpjumper as a alternative mode of transportation (and for fun in the warmer months). I get worried about an unplanned Avalanche occurring and all the green truck drivers on the road, seems nearly every trip has a semi incident of some sort. Heading out tomorrow in the "Polar Vortex".

Trucks are responsible for a significant percentage of collisions.  I saw some report on the Coq, and it was staggering.
