...and there's no way the gap in "more refined interior and ride" is $16k big.

Using the 84 month term to get to a $16k price difference is disingenuous at best.  The Golf is $8k more.

Rio and Golf are different classes of car.  This is why Kia has a Forte5 which is the Golf competitor and is priced closer to the Golf.  Golf is 7.5" longer, 3" wider than the Rio.  In the compact segment that's a huge difference.  Just like Fit doesn't compare to Golf even though it may have a trick interior space, the Civic hatch is Golf's competition.

Agreed. The Forte 5 makes a very compelling case, particularly on the money for features front

Yeah, I can't believe the Golf and Rio5 were mentioned in the same breath.  WTF?  Only on this forum...

not disingenuous at all...it's already been shown that the long term financing options are what most people are taking when buying new cars, but a wide margin...even that aside, $8k is still a sizable chunk of change.

the Rio5 is Kia's smallest hatch, the Golf is VW's smallest hatch (sold here)...i already said the Golf is larger and is nicer...my point is the price difference.

Oh, well if that's the standard by which we compare vehicles, then why don't we just compare both the Golf and the Rio5 against the $18 295  Chevrolet Spark (in fully loaded guise), the $17 598 Nissan Micra SR, or the $18 798 Mitsubishi Micra GT?

Obviously the Micra is the best choice because it's Nissan's smallest hatch, and it's $8000 cheaper ($16000 by your math) than even the Rio5.

exterior dimensions are mostly irrelevant as you don't sit on the hood.

the wheelbase on the Golf is 57mm longer than the Rio5...that's basically 2 inches...the Golf is also 74mm wider (about 3")...sure, it is larger than the Rio5 (which i've stated numerous times already)...the total passenger volume difference is 85L (the cargo areas are the same)...yes, that's a bit here and there...it's not like we're talking a Fit and an Accord here...there's not THAT much difference in size.

FFS, now you're just being obtuse...the Rio5 is much closer in size to a Golf than any of those microcars are.

look, i've already said the Golf is a great car...my beef is that in this trim at $35k, that's a tough ask...my comparison to a Rio5 is only because it isn't that much smaller in size and you can get one pretty loaded up with features (moreso than many other small cars)...the price gap is pretty substantial, especially so if you finance long term.

i'm not sure why people get so defensive about it in here.

I'm only being as obtuse as you.  You literally said 'Golf is VW's smallest hatch, Rio5 is Kia's".

The Rio is a completely different class of car, which is the point I was trying to make by bringing up the Micra.

If you're going to compare a Kia, compare the Forte5 SX at $30 000, and you're still $5000 cheaper.

It's pretty cut and dry, guys.

B-segment/supermini :

1. VW Polo
2. Ford Fiesta
3. Renault Clio (even if this is large in its class)
4. Peugeot 208
5. Kia Rio
6. Hyundai i20
7. Toyota Yaris
8. Mazda2
9. Audi A1

C-segment/compact

1. VW Golf
2. Ford Focus
3. Renault Mégane
4. Kia C'eed
5. Peugeot 308
6. Toyota Auris
7. Opel Astra
8. Hyundai i30
9. Mazda3
10. Audi A3
11. BMW 1er
12. current Merc A class

Of course, if you want to cross shop and compare an Orange to a mandarin orange when purchasing with your own chequebook, that's fine. But the classes stand.

i already said, i picked the Rio5 because it isn't that much smaller and can be well optioned out to up its price...i picked it because it is likely the closest you can get to the Golf  (in terms of size and price)...this is stuff i've said since the beginning, so i'm not sure why it keeps coming up.

i could have, but it's larger...and knowing the crowd in here, you'd rip me apart for picking a larger car and not comparing it against the Golf Wagon or perhaps even the Jetta (if talking the sedans).

i like your list...but the category was never my point.

Why would I get a optioned up Rio, when I can get a base Passat for the same price?  :stick:

People have to figure out their price range then figure out if they want a sub-compact, compact, CUV etc.

Some people will see value in a loaded up compact, but not in a midsize car with fewer features for a similar price. Others will see just the opposite.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

If we use sales to gauge success, the Golf is failing...I bet most people just walk up to the dealer and end up buying a Tiguan

A Hatchback in the last year of its lifecycle isn't selling as well as a new CUV.

No :censor:.
