That’s not normal at all. When winter breaks, it might break hard

Deep freeze here still - it has been pretty much below -20C since the middle of January here so no chance of snow melt. I have a 5ft pile on one side of my driveway and a 3ft pile on the other. Very unusual for here.

Yep, this cold weather can leave any time now. We have less snow than last year, but this deep freeze sucks.

July.  I'm just hoping at this point that there's no snow and it's above freezing by July.

So a bit of snag ... lots of white smoke. At first I thought headgasket but a little more research and a ODB2 code read (check engine light was on).

hmmm ...

A new EGR valve was super expensive so I wasn't buying that. So cleaning is what is required. The intake after the throttle body had a connection to the EGR.

Throttle body comes off.

In that bump above the throttle body is a small passage that was clogged with carbon. After much awkward cleaning I was able to blow carb cleaner though it. The EGR valve was cleaned as well and no white smoke!

Funny how EGR's affect little 4 cyl's. The Mazda P5 I bought had a stuck EGR and it ran terrible, no smoke but all kinds of drivability issues. Wonder how many cars get junked for such a simple fix.

Wiper arms were looking pretty shabby

A lick of paint has it looking ok.

Oil change done - only takes 2.8L! Easy. Next up is timing belt and spark plugs.

I don't know if really matters it took me a while track down these dual ground spark plugs. I finally got sometime to install these.

You get to set the gap twice a plug with the dual ground plugs.

Old vs new. To be fair this one was by far the worst of the lot.

Does it need dual ground? What’s the benefit?

I have no idea. But it was written on the engine to use it so I did. The old ones were a single that seemed to work fine so I likely didn't need to bother.

One of the most annoying things was the driver's door handle broken.

It came with both sides but I only needed the driver's side.

Door panel needs to come off.

The window winder was serious pain to get off. Two screws behind here. The top is pried off.

Door panel off

Door handle bolts inside door were a little frozen on. When I got them free the other side dug into the plastic of the handle and just spun so I had to cut them off. Why do I need to use the angle grinder for every job?

new plastic clip.

Door handle finished. Works nice.

Here is the broken handle. You can see why it didn't work. A known weak point on these.

Was not really.  :)

Took half an hour to get the damn window winder off. Super awkward.

Seems like the same kind of fun when I work on the TT.

I’m willing to bet a lot of money the Tercel doesn’t have as many electric gremlins.

You'd win that bet....
