The boy is going to give it an attempt at polishing it this weekend. Rain in the forecast so it got new wiper blades. Also a note for the new manual driver.

Would that particular car have clearcoat paint ? If not you will probably be able to bring the colour back. My 2007 Fit was red with clearcoat and there was no way to bring it back. Started to turn almost pink. A new paint job would cost way too much so i sold the car.
Honda in particular had trouble with the solid colour paints The Toyota Matrix suffers the same fate in red in my area.

Handbrake...aint it flat where you are?  Just leave it in gear.  I'm anti-handbrake.  Except in winter, then I'm pro-handbrake(r).  ;D

It is a manual yes. And clear coat - what is left of it.

I was in the habit of pulling the handbrake in every manual vehicle I owned.  It was only when I started driving automatics that I fell out of the habit.

I've used the handbrake on both automatic cars I've owned in my life, the JGC & the V70, never broke the habit from a manual  ;D

Yeah, my Mum's like that.  She pulls the handbrake (or footbrake) on all her vehicles, regardless of transmission type.  I have to make a note whenever I drive her vehicles that the parking brake is on.  Luckily, modern vehicles are good at warning you that the Parking Brake is on.

It took my brother for a loop one time, though.  She still had her 2009 Pathfinder, and he took it to the store.  Didn't realize the parking brake was on the whole time.  When he got back, he mentioned that he thought something must be wrong, because it didn't seem like it had much power.  He toasted the rear brakes on it, the poor thing.

Most of my cars were manuals. But I always used the parking brake regardless.

It's one of those use it or lose it things. In the East, those brake linkages will rust up if not used regularly. If you then decide to use them, they'll quite likely fail to release.

I'm not sure how well the electric ones will fare long term. I had those on the 3.6R Outback and on the Jetta. I'm not really a fan.

This.  Both of our cars are automatics (welp) and we use the handbrakes all the time.  Especially on the Golf that rolls a fair bit with the parking brake.

So's mine, never use it, except in winter. But only on special occasions.

I was taught back in the dark ages to always use the parking brake, and I still do. With an automatic, you were to stop, apply the parking brake while your foot on the brake, shift into neutral and take you foot off the brake to remove the load on the transmission, and then shift into park. This was especially important parking on hills. With a manual trans, I do the same thing. Apply the parking brake (on a hill), remove my foot from the brake pedal and let the car "roll" onto the parking brake. Put the car in first gear, stop the engine and let out the clutch.

I used the Sonata's parking brake almost daily.

And it is sold!

My boy decided that he would like something a little nicer than a 24 year economy car so is on the look out for a Mazda 3.

Left our care with 355k kms and running strong.

Lost a little on this one after having to put it through the safety inspection but not too much consider we got a lot of use out of it.

It was actually a fun little car to drive. In some ways I preferred it to the TSX but he wants something with such luxuries as power locks and A/C.
