Dent's 90s two door - 1996 Toyota Tercel Sport
« on: January 18, 2019, 10:29:36 am »

So I bought something from the 90s. It is a red, 2dr, 5spd, DOHC engine. Came with this lovely fix to the driver's side door handle (doesn't work). Any guesses?  ;D

Nissan Micra or some such.  Don't know if they were DOHC though

Tercel and Micra weren't DOHC, I don't think.

I think it's a second generation Toyota Paseo.

Paseo or Integra?

Wrong door handle style to be an Integra.

Paseo, I recall this issue with the cracked door handle being pretty common, same for Tercel's.

None of the above suggestions are weird enough based on prior history.   ;D

But I do agree with Paseo..

It looks like Toyota went from a fancier door handle/lock on the first gen Paseo to a crappier version on the second gen. Had Toyota already begun the cost cutting at this point?Second gen Paseo looks to be a solid guess.

Paseo does look like the best guess.

ktm525 actually nailed it on the first post. 1995 Toyota Tercel Sport. For 1995 the Tercel gained the twin cam motor (and 13hp) shared with the Paseo. The plan was/is to take the engine/transmission wiring from this car and swap into the Innocenti. Driving it home though it drives really, really nicely. Its a cherry of a little car - I quite like it. The wife has starting talking about ditching the crappy box Civic for this instead. So I need to see in it the day light and do a bit more testing. I violated every good buying principle for this one (saw it night, met the seller at a gas station, etc because I was interested mostly in the engine). It is also a really nice donor motor - a little (physically very small) twin cam motor with 93hp.

Oil leak from the cap a bit so some clean up needed. 5E-FE 1.5L DOHC engine (93 hp and 100 lb⋅ft of torque)

The body appears to be really quite nice ...

345k kms on it but runs well.

Interior is pretty nice. Some staining on the seat but I bet it could be cleaned up if needed

How to make a Tercel look big - park it next to an Innocenti!

Dammit! I was looking at the previous gen Tercels and didn't think to look at the '95 style. But now that you mention it, I quite liked the Sport and I vaguely remember a magazine saying it was a budget 3-series.  ;D

Ironically, find a 95 3-series with 345K and its way more of a heap than that Tercel.

Sport model. Triple digit torque. I see you are wearing your big boy pants today.

Great find. Looking forward to what happens to the car.

Interestingly the two door body style was only sold in North America.

This one has the Sport trim with the factory body skirts.
