Car purchase advice
« on: January 16, 2019, 01:30:03 am »
Hi everyone,

I'm new here and don't know much about cars, but I was wondering if I could get some car advice from the community. I'm looking to buy a vehicle, ideally one that is good for road trips. Here's my spec "wish list":

  • ~7 seater (mostly so I can fold down the back seats and have large trunk space)
  • hybrid (this is pretty important to me)
  • 4wd/awd
  • 50,000km or less on the vehicle
  • ~$22,000 budget (CAD)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Your budget and mileage is unreasonable....for what you want and for what you're willing to pay...no vehicle exists.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Yeah. You'd need to add at least 12k to get into a Highlander Hybrid with your mileage requirements.

yea, your requirements are pretty specific...if you want a 7 seater hybrid with AWD, you are going to be quite limited in what is available...the Highlander Hybrid would likely fit the bill, but you're either going to need something really old with a lot more kms on it, or you are going to need to up your budget.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

As stated above, there is no vehicle that exists that fits your requirements.  You will need to compromise something.

If you want 7 seater with loads of cargo space, good on a road trip, with 50,000kms or less, for $22,000, you're looking at a Dodge Grand Caravan.

If you want decent cargo space, hybrid, with 50,000kms or less, for $22,000, you're looking at a Toyota Prius V.

If you wanted an decent amount of cargo space, AWD, with 50,000kms or less, for $22,000, you're looking at a Kia Sorento.

You'll have to compromise on something in order to get something close to what you want.  I suggest driving some of these to help figure out what is more of a priority and make an adjustment to what you want in your next new vehicle.

if you're open to new products, in an interesting case of timing, there was a recent review of the new Subaru Ascent...even in base Convenience trim, it's reasonably well equipped, has AWD and seats 8...it's $36k (plus fees, taxes, etc)...sure, over your budget in terms of price, but it's new, has full warranty and you can likely get decent payments on it...because it's brand spanking new, don't expect 0% interest or anything, but it looks like it checks all your boxes.

It's not a hybrid though.

there's only 1 vehicle close to all the criteria on the market and it's the Highlander Hybrid.

My 2014 limited(top trim) was $30K and it had 150K km on it.  anithing with lower mileage will be $35K $40K.  you could get a previous model(2010 to 2013) fpor maybe around the 25K but they will be fairly mileage.

this is likely about as close to your wish list as possible...the only deviation is mileage (but it's still not too high).

You are dreaming....if hybrid is important to you, you will have to give up AWD and 7 seater - at least if you want to stay within your budget.

I’d say, a Toyota Prius V or a Ford C-Max would fit the bill for you @22k or less...

That's a nice find.  It'll fetch much more $$ if it was in the GTA.
