Another important question to ask is that will the engine in this supra gain the legendary status of thr 2JZ. Can it get 700+hp reliably.

I'm thinking Toyota did some longevity testing and that's why they de-tuned it from 385 to 335HP......

I dunno.  It just seems like by going with a platform and drivetrain developed by BMW, they're just kinda half-assing it on this one.

^^   That's why I said they should have called it something else.  And I will stick to my projection that Canada will only receive the loaded models and they will be $80K in Ontario.  Something to see on Motoring TV for 10 minutes and then it will be forgotten.

That's the only thing that bothers me with this car is that it's basically a Z4. Yes, I know there are some changes but man even that interior is pure BMW. For a SUPRA I wanted something a little more pure Japanese not a rebadged Z4. I still like it but that's the one thing that bothers me.

This isn't as much a partnership as it was just altering a Z4 and calling it a Supra. Slightly disappointing regardless of the justifications.

This.

Looks like a hot mess from any angle.

Has all the timeworn cliches baked in: cartoon giant rear lip spoiler looking like a tongue taunting the clucking grannies behind, double-bubble roof, side window shape and barrel shape in front of the windshield cribbed from their '60s Toyota 2000GT, and as many fake slits, vents, lines, folds and excrescences as that much sheet metal can hold.

It's professionally awful but sort of fun being so over the top. People used to video game racing and who grew up with Cars the movie will love it, I'd guess. To me it's a weak grab for the ricer crowd pining away in California fjords for a real Supra revival. Not this. Short wide squat and inelegant. Could buy a 240i and save money while not coming across as a dork waving their hands and yelling "look at me!" but that's not extrovert enough for some. The CH-R is similarly gauche, suitable for retired schoolmarms and postmistresses who loudly proclaim they're still alive by driving around in an overstyled nerdmobile with only FWD and an engine suitable for pulling skins off rice puddings, nothing more.

Toyota, feel the excitement.

i had to look up "excrescence".

 :surrend:

at first i didn't quite like the look, but then the photos of scales to human, make it look more real somehow, and better.

i'll look forward to seeing it in person at auto show or something.   if they even bring the thing.

True.  But nobody seems to object when someone claims a car is a total home run and that the manufacturer will sell a million of them.  Go figure.

Fair enough. In the case of the Supra though, there's zero indications that this isn't a good car. People are mostly butthurt about the BMW drivetrain (which by most accounts is excellent) and the use of the Supra name.

I don't know.  I think that 1) oddball styling 2) the abandonment of the heart and soul of their iconic performance  vehicle to another manufacturer 3) the reliability concerns engaged by that choice and 4) pricing are all legitimate grounds for calling into question future sales success.  I mean, nobody is claiming to know with a hundred per cent certainty, any more than those heaping enthusiastic praise on a newly released model know that it will be a sales success.  I'm no Toyota fanboy and I am not the least bit "butthurt" over their choices.  But I can say that there are a number of question marks hanging over future sales success, in my estimation.

I agree, it's not a slam dunk from a sales perspective. But the reasons being parroted the most are mostly around the name and drivetrain. I don't think we know whether actual buyers will care about that.

As for the price, I'm not sure it's out of line with what other two seat sports cars are going for. Is there even a cheaper two seater that has more power? I can't think of one off the top of my head.

Isn't the 370Z right in line power wise?  Definitely long in the tooth, but pretty compelling comparison with a nicely equipped MSRP of $34
