WEALTHY AMERICANS ARE BUYING STATION WAGONS INSTEAD OF SUV'S

James Stewart

If there is one thing the world knows about America these days (besides Trump); it's that the American people love their SUV's.

But it looks as though that fact could be changing thanks to an abundance of choice in the market.

According to a report conducted by Edmunds.com, approximately 212,000 Americans drove off into the sunset in their brand spanking new station wagons last year. Considering the size of America that might not sound like very many, however that is a 29% increase when compared to sales figures in the US five years ago.

One of the main reasons for such an increase could be down to one simple fact, five years ago there wasn't exactly much choice in the market when it came to station wagons. But since then Volvo introduced the V90, Jaguar rolled out the XF Sportbrake and Volkswagen sailed the Golf Sport Wagon across the Atlantic to the US shores also. Not to mention for the Americans who have that little bit extra cash to spend there is also the Porsche Panamera.

Finally the American station wagon market gets a bit of break from the standard Audi, Mercedes and BMW monsters.

Sam Russell, Buick's Marketing Director had this to say, “There’s a group of consumers who are greatly interested in the versatility and capability of an SUV, but they don’t want to be seen as someone who just goes with the flow”.

Some may say that the the good old station wagon has had its day and sales dropped for a good a reason, but others may argue that sales dropped so dramatically before because car makers stopped making them. For now however, I believe the station wagon is back, and they are looking better than ever.

I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

Still think Buick should sell the Tour X here, and add TTV6 with AWD and I think it would be a hit.

This article has been making the rounds but it's a bit misleading. Literally all of that growth has come from the Subaru Outback. In 2018 it had 84% of the U.S. wagon market.

The article says the wagon market grew by 29% in five years, but Outback sales grew by 51% in that same time period – meaning that if we exclude the Outback from the equation, wagon sales are actually down 28%.

So the real story is, despite the fact that other wagons are not doing well, the Outback is hugely successful.

Not to mention wagon sales are certainly down from 2017 because the Golf wagon is down by about 12,000 units and the Outback is down by 10,000 units.

I don't really consider the Outback a wagon. Sure it's wagon shaped but the lifted stance turns it into a crossover.

I'm all over buying a proper wagon than a wannabe "SUV" with the engine pointing the wrong way

Saw one of these CLA wagons in Europe 1.5 years ago.  The first pic I grabbed off the Internet, the second picture I took in Vienna, Austria:

Nah nah nah nah nah I see wagon variants all the time in Germany. Less so in France- where the tendence is towards MPVs for families, though I rode in an older Peugeot 508 wagon to lunch during a track day session last year.

This still takes the cake :

Owned once 2 Saturn SW2: my 2000 with ION alloys was the one with a stick, my 2001 the one with roof rack, automatic.

I missed the practicality of the wagon, a hatchback like my Volt is close but not as good.
Polymer body panels were brillant: not worrying much about parking digs.
Still hope on day for an AWD wagon with polymer & a plug (I mean full EV, not PHEV)...
Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

I owned a few wagons (Passat 1.8T 5 speed and a Volvo V70R 6 speed). When selling the biggest appeal to the buyers was the low load height for their aging dogs.

I am curious about a A4 Avant vs Q5 comparison. I tested a Q5 against a Volvo XC60 (new one) and prefered the Audi. Couldn't get excited enough to put money on the barrelhead and got distracted looking at old school lifted Suburbans.  ;D
