I have VERY fond memories of the 1997 JEEP Cherokee that my parents leased.

It was the very first vehicle that I ever drove when I turned 16 and got my Learners.  I can still picture my very first drive in it.

Those Cherokees had just such an analogue feel to them, and were a complete joy to drive.

Their's was a red SPORT 4x4 with the 4.0 I6, just like the one shown in this Retro Review.  They pulled a pop-up trailer with it, much like mine.

I have a buddy who bought one at least 5 years ago as a temporary beater around town for $500. They are still driving it, I think all they've replaced is an alternator

I had a 98 Sport 4x4 with the 5spd manual... could chirp the tires shifting into 3rd still if I banged the shift off right. I beat the :censor: outta that thing during the 30month lease I had. Feel sorry for whoever bought it afterwards because I got stuck in a swamp with it & filled up with 3" of water when off-roading once   Had to take out the front seats, console, carpet, etc... to just drain the water afterwards & dry everything off  ;D  It was only 6months old at the time

Haha, that's awesome. I briefly owned a '99 two door Sport 4x4 with a manual. Got it for pretty cheap from a client of mine about 10 years ago. I had it for a year and then someone made a left turn into the driver's door and it was written off.

Unfortunately I never did any real off-roading with it. Took it to a buddy's camp for his bachelor party once and after I went to sleep my drunk friends took it for a rip through some mud.  ;D

Would love to have another one at some point, but most of them are super rusty and the manuals are hard to find.  :-\

I had a 1998 Sport version for a few years. Later and briefly owned a project 1994 which I never did anything with. Good solid and reasonable vehicles. I'd own another.

They were fun little Jeeps, small, yet the 4.0 made them go pretty good. It was like a mountain goat & would rarely get stuck anywhere. Only issue I had was the front rotors were sh!t!!! They'd warp so easily, I went through a few pairs under warranty and then they weren't willing to replace them after the 3rd set... so I just put on upgraded ones that never gave me another issue.

Yup - I had brake issues with mine too. Had a few brake bolt snap. Oddly ours someone keep stealing the lug nuts off it. Went through a couple sets.

I wanted one of these so bad in the 90's but couldn't afford it.  I keep meaning to stop and take a pic to post here because I drive by one every day that I assume is for sale on someone's front lawn.  It doesn't look in the condition of this pic, I'm pretty sure it's been sitting there for years and just moved so they can cut the lawn around it

Those DSMs were everywhere for a time. I guess being a cheap performance option takes its toll as I almost never see one around anymore.

I remember a buddy of mine complaining he had to have a brake job within a year of buying one new.  He still loved them though and owned at least two of that type, then went on to a JGC afterward.  Still has the JGC.

‘90s cars question; did we get the mid-90s Celica notchback in Canada?  To me it seems I only ever saw liftback versions here.

Good question, I had forgotten that the notchback even existed. I can check my '95 Carguide later to see if it's in there.

In hindsight it's a bit odd that coupes were offered in two bodystyles for a while. Nissan did the same thing with S13 240SX and the 200SX before it.

1980-1983 Toyota Corolla SR-5 offered three coupe bodies ... and you also had the option of the two-door sedan.

VW Corrado VR6.

Interesting sled. I was disappointed at the time when they replaced the light Sirocco with this much heavier model. I still think my favourite affordable hooning car of the nineties was an Eagle AWD Talon. In black of course.

I loved my Cherokee....and why I was so mad when Jeep took the Cherokee name in vain when they bolted it to that new dumpster fire thing  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :stfu: :stfu:

Lighten up Francis.....

Right now I think the best jeep value is a WJ Grand Cherokee with the 4.0L. Unlike the plain old Cherokees, you can actually find them, and if you chose correctly with regard to engine and transfer case, you can actually get something pretty reliable for next to nothing.

I still prefer the look of the ZJ. Always wanted a Limited with the 5.9.

It's hard to find a WJ out here that's not either a rust bucket or been modified to death.  My in-laws had one for almost 10 years, 400k on it and no complaints when they sold it.
