PS - anyone remember the sleek and sexy 2 door Ford Explorer 'Sport'?  Yeah - explain that to me please...  :rofl2:

The S10 Blazer and Jimmy were also available as "sleek" two door models. Probably a carryover from the 80s (and earlier) when a lot of SUV's were two doors. (Bronco, Bronco II, Blazer, 4-Runner, etc.)

Yeah, many of those started life as two doors before the four door models were added around 1990-1991.

I can't say I have any real craving for a return to manufacturers kicking out two door versions of their sedans.  For the most part, they weren't any sportier or any better looking than their sedan counterparts - just less comfortable and less practical.  Like if someone is trying to tell me that today's Civic Coupe is Sportier than a Civic Sedan in equivalent trim, well, I'll just chuckle.  I'd much rather see more dedicated coupes.  I remember when I was shopping for my Altima 3.5 SE, the salesman tried to get me to look at the coupe version.  Him: It's more sporty!  Me: How, exactly?  Him: Uhhhhhhh.....  I'm not seeing much "sport" in a cramped back seat.  It's almost like the whole concept rests on this laughably twisted logic:  most really sporty cars have two doors, so if we take a not very sporty 4 door sedan and take away two doors, we make it more sporty!   :hide:

On VW forums some people are very angry that the two door GTI was dropped, and that a two door Golf R is not offered.

I loved the Stealth when I was a kid. Forget the twin turbo, I would have been happy with the base model. I thought it was the coolest looking car on the road. Unfortunately my parents only bought base model economy cars.

I think I saw a 3000 GT like once or twice in my whole life, they weren't nearly as common as the Stealth.

Also anyone remember the XR4TI? I thought those were really cool looking.

Yep, I remember the XR4Ti well.  While it wasn't a 90s car, I thought it was a pretty cool car back in the 80s.  I think they stopped making them in 89.  I was in high school at the time and remember wanting one of those more than the 5.0.   ;D

When I was in high school in the late '90s the local Ford dealer had a used one for dirt cheap. I was tempted to buy it, but I don't think they were particularly reliable so it's probably a good thing I didn't. Would have been a very cool first car to own though.

The Germans did a few good things in the 90s. AMG merged with Mercedes and the AMG models became more "affordable" and better in many ways. The C36 was the first car made that way, and they were great cars. Okay, the C36 was still expensive, but not exotic car bucks like the AMG unique models produced previously.

Porsche was financially a disaster at the beginning of the 90s. The US market fell apart for them, and sales of the 911 were dismal. They'd raised prices dramatically in the 80s to capture windfall yuppie profits, but it came crashing down with the early 90s recession. Luckily, they bounced back thanks mostly to the Boxster, giving them a much lower priced car to get some volumes going. If the Boxster had been another 924 they probably would be hanging out with Saab somewhere right now.

Audi found success with the A4 in the late 90s. The car had marginal build quality, but looked good and sold well.

The E36 BMW was a strong product. It sold well enough thanks to aggressive pricing (you could buy an entry level 3-series for not much more than an Accord) and helped BMW weather the 90s recession. Build quality wasn't Toyota-like but the cars were simple enough that people didn't drive them off cliffs to get away from them.

Overall the 90s wasn't the strong decade for the Germans that it was for the Japanese. The German makes were suddenly staring at competition that was far more reliable at 75% of the price. In the 80s the only competition the Germans faced was from England and Italy. Mercedes, Audi and BMW needed to be in full panic mode the instant the LS400 hit the market. Whoops.

I just saw a red Stealth drive by, I see it quite often, must live near me.   I think it's a TT, but I haven't had a good look.

Thought this thread was missing a little North American content.  Not sure if it’s a great car, but interesting, and, I think, a genuine attempt to get away from badge engineering...

Speaking of Mazda US vs Canada. Canada got the rare coupe version of the 323 - not sold in the US.

‘90s cars question; did we get the mid-90s Celica notchback in Canada?  To me it seems I only ever saw liftback versions here.

I don't recall ever seeing one like that. But lots of liftbacks.

Good question, I had forgotten that the notchback even existed. I can check my '95 Carguide later to see if it's in there.

In hindsight it's a bit odd that coupes were offered in two bodystyles for a while. Nissan did the same thing with S13 240SX and the 200SX before it.

I love it when a plan comes together.

I was driving behind one of these this morning even in the same colour.

I have VERY fond memories of the 1997 JEEP Cherokee that my parents leased.

It was the very first vehicle that I ever drove when I turned 16 and got my Learners.  I can still picture my very first drive in it.

Those Cherokees had just such an analogue feel to them, and were a complete joy to drive.

Their's was a red SPORT 4x4 with the 4.0 I6, just like the one shown in this Retro Review.  They pulled a pop-up trailer with it, much like mine.

Other than having warranty repairs at just about every oil change I really enjoyed my '98 JGC V8 Laredo. Back in those days there were probably more Grand Cherokees around our neighbourhood than anything else.

I had a 98 Sport 4x4 with the 5spd manual... could chirp the tires shifting into 3rd still if I banged the shift off right. I beat the :censor: outta that thing during the 30month lease I had. Feel sorry for whoever bought it afterwards because I got stuck in a swamp with it & filled up with 3" of water when off-roading once   Had to take out the front seats, console, carpet, etc... to just drain the water afterwards & dry everything off  ;D  It was only 6months old at the time
