I remember when this generation came out, and the entire forum was in an uproar over the fact that the 2.0T had less overall power than the previous gen, but with more low end torque, with a lower 0-60mph time, all in the name of better fuel efficiency.

I wonder if the lifetime average fuel economy of these cars with the 2.0T was better than the previous gen?

I remember that too.

I recently saw a TFL video on YouTube comparing this to a 170 hp Passat, and it was basically a driver's race to 60 mph. 

Looking on Fuelly there is minimal to no difference in Fuel Econ between the years when you filter to the 2.0L
