seems like the improvements should help it raise a notch above its predecessor...should be a competent option in the class.

No more manual, but not surprised seeing how they relegated it to a base model vehicle. I did consider the CX-5 briefly years ago, but ultimately I didn't because 1. It cost roughly $3,000 more at $24,something. 2. It had less stuff (no power/heated seats, no moonroof, no auto lights or wipers, etc.)

And one from Redline Reviews.

Note that he says all four window switches are auto which is different than the specs online (only drivers). Wonder which is right? He also gives is a bit of gas despite the conditions. Nice to see.

Nice car, and that Signature trim is really cool, and Mazda finally gets their act together and offer Carplay and Android Auto.

What about the diesel engine though ? Is it finally offered in Canada ?

Have you noticed more forum member care about CarPlay/Android Auto than the build quality of a car

Well, it's just that Mazda has been promising it for years, same for the diesel engine...

For people who drive a new car for 3-4 years and get a new car, features are more important than long-term reliability or build quality.

He said the interior in general, and back seat in particular, were a bit cramped for the class.  And he's not a big dude.

This is a compact in the end. A jacked up Mazda 3 with more cargo room.

And to be honest, the CX-5 already offered good reliability and build quality. The fit and finish in this car is great for the category. So now they finally offer CarPlay and Android Auto, which they had been promising ever since the new model CX-5 came out, I think it is worth mentioning.

And this plus the new turbo engine, I think we can now say that Mazda offers a well rounded product with this Mazda CX-5. We can't complain about the lack of power anymore, and we can't complain about the lack of cellphone integration either.

With these improvements, I think the CX-5 beats the CR-V, fair and square.

Well he said "for the class".  Presumably, other "compact" offerings in the class are more spacious than this.  Might matter quite a lot to some.  I expect it wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me - I'd gladly take more power and better handling than, say a CR-V.  I was just surprised by the comment as it sure doesn't look like a tiny vehicle from the outside.

Indeed - and not just on this forum.  I get the feeling that a lot of contemporary buyers are more looking for a mobile connectivity platform / stereo system than they are looking for a vehicle.  Like how every review on The Straight Pipes (which I quite enjoy for the most part) has to have a discussion on whether the car offers rewinding satellite radio (I sure don't enjoy that part  ::) ).  But the market is changing.  People barely want cars anymore.  That's life, I guess.

But, as I said above, the CX-5 already offered good reliability and fit and finish. Everyone knew that. Mazda is adding a turbo engine, which everyone should be happy about judging how they had been criticizing the Mazda 6 and the CX-5 for being gutless.

Mazda is also finally adding a proper cellphone integration with Carplay and Android, and again this was something that was previously lacking and now it's here, so we're mentioning it.

It's not that people care more about CarPlay and Android Auto than they care about the rest of the car, it's just that the rest of the car was already a great package that only gets greated with those new features and the new engine.

It does look like a bigger vehicle for sure.
