And my twelve year-old Sonata is still kicking butt.

That's why it's kicking butt - it's not a new engine.  12 years ago Honda didn't make crappy engines either (looking at you, 1.5l turbo).

AMEN!!!!

In the quest for greater fuel economy, we have sacrificed reliabilty.

And if that wasn't bad enough I've seen car companies advertising lowest maintenance costs in the segment, made possible by 15k+ oil change intervals while using 0W-20 and lower weights, coupled with "lifetime" transmission fluids.  Honestly, used cars shouldn't cost what they do today IMHO.

You are describing JLR arent you? 2 years 34k ow20 between changes, lifetime transmission fluid, etc.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

So they are disposable, after 5 years you just get a new, lease and they take the old one away for scrap?!?!?! 35k for an oil change, thats ridiculous.

yes, yes it is - for the 2L turbo and the diesels

the AJ engines are still 1 year / 26k - which is still way too long - I am doing every 5k

Every 5k is seriously overkill with synthetic oil.

It is. Overkill is good when it comes to a Jag with 620hp.

But anyways, the new SC seems like a "all you need" vs a "want" vehicle, which Hyundai is very good at doing. Perfect for the urban cowboys.

High interval oil changes typically involves 1. base stock that won't break down and sludge in that interval, 2. adequate detergents and sacrificial metals to last that interval, 3. filters large enough to capture the expected amount of dirt. 10-11g capacity is typically good for up to 12,000 km and 30g up to 40,000 km.

Mobil 1 has their Extended Performance 24,000 km oil & filter and Amsoil Signature Series oil & filter is good for 24,000 km in severe service and 40,000 km or 700 hours in normal service. So if they specified the right type of oil and filter, 35,000 km is no problem. I've never heard of two year oil though.

Weren't these Hyundai engines prone to catch fire?

I think it's the newer ones.

No, I saw a VW commercial where they were proud that Jetta cost less to maintain than Corolla. And in another thread someone said the 80k DSG service was missing from the schedule. IIRC it turned out it's been moved to 120(?)k so now on paper for the warranty period, it is cheaper to service than a rolla, LOL. It's a ridiculous trend and ppl who are not aware will be the ones having oil consumption and other issue and trading in the cars long before the 10 years they planned to get out of them.

MFGs want them to be disposable and motorists will bear the costs, until there is a law against planned obsolescence for cars.

Went in to work a little early this morning and saw two Santa Cruz on the way and both within a few minutes of leaving home.  First time I've seen them in the flesh.  They look good imo.  Nicely proportioned.

Haven't seen a Maverick yet.

Close friend ordered a Santa Cruz Ultimate in the pictured colour.  Dealer says delivery is 8 to 12 weeks away.  She's very excited.

I saw a gray one...and really liked the looks and proportions.

Might even be my favorite Hyundai!
